The story of the RCA 12AX7 really starts with a problem.

Between 1920 and 1940 the world rapidly changed. Radios and telephones were connecting the world. Recordings were coming to life through home stereos on the very first vinyl pressings. In the 1930’s even your car could have a radio!

And what did all of this technology have in common? TTTUBES!

At the time, most equipment relied on much larger preamp tubes like the 6SL7 and 6SN7 (which had gains of 70 and 20 respectively).

These tubes ran hotter, took up more space, and were more expensive to build. But most importantly, the world needed more volume and clarity for communications, recording, and broadcasting. A higher gain tube had to be invented.

So RCA got to work.

Deep in their labs, engineers were developing a new kind of tube. The goal was not just to make another preamp tube. The goal was to make one that could help move electronics into the future.

In 1946 the first RCA 12AX7 was born. A version we only now call, the all mighty black plate. It was a HUGE step forward. It was small, built on a 9-pin base, and had a gain factor of 100. That was a big!

This little tube could do more than any of the larger tubes that came before it.

and that would changed everything to this day.

Because the 12AX7 was smaller and more efficient, equipment could shrink. Designers could build more compact radios, cleaner sounding hi-fi gear, and more powerful guitar and HiFi amplifiers. The tube helped engineers do more with less space. It fit perfectly into a world that was rapidly modernizing after World War II, when companies were racing to build better consumer electronics, better communications equipment, and better audio systems.

But the early RCA 12AX7 black plate was not perfect.

Like all vacuum tubes, it wore out. It could fail. And in that era, that really mattered. Tubes were not just sitting inside guitar amps for fun. They were inside radios, military communications gear, studio equipment, and all kinds of machines people depended on. If one tube went bad, it could cause noise, failure, or even bring down an entire piece of equipment.

So reliability became the next big challenge.

That pushed companies like RCA to keep improving their designs. Over time, the 12AX7 changed. RCA moved away from the early black plate style and later versions were built with reliability and consistency more in mind. As manufacturing improved, these tubes became better suited to the demands of a world that needed electronics to work longer, quieter, and more dependably.

And yet, the black plate never lost its reputation.

That is why people still talk about it today. Even though later versions could be cleaner and more reliable, many listeners feel the early black plate tubes have a warmer, richer, more textured sound. The 12AX7 is not just a piece of electronics. It is a piece of history.

It represents the moment when audio gear got smaller, louder, and more capable — and in many ways, we are still living in the world the 12AX7 helped create.

Decades later, the 12AX7 is still used in guitar amps, hi-fi preamps, phono stages, studio gear, microphone preamps, and countless boutique audio designs. That says a lot. Most technology gets replaced and forgotten, but the 12AX7 never really went away. Its mix of high gain, small size, and musical character made it so useful that designers kept building around it, generation after generation. What began as a breakthrough in the late 1940s is still shaping the sound of modern audio today.

Much like how the right fuel keeps a car running smoothly, high-quality tubes are what make your amp perform at its best. Without them, you’re not just missing out on great sound—you’re holding your amp back from reaching its full potential. If you want top-tier performance, you must pay attention to tubes you are using, just as you would the oil going into your car.

Vintage Tubes and Legendary Amps: A Timeless Partnership

What’s interesting about tubes is that, unlike computers, gas engines, and other technologies that improve over time, the best tubes were actually made in the past. Back in the day, when tubes were the leading technology, companies fiercely competed to produce the best ones—whether it was the best sounding, the longest lasting, or the loudest. This competition pushed innovation to its peak, resulting in superior tube quality. That’s why, if you want premium guitar (or HiFi) tubes, you have to look to history! The finest examples of tube craftsmanship are vintage, not modern.

When it comes to iconic guitar amps, a few names like Fender, Vox, and Marshall have earned a permanent place in music history. While we could debate which are the most important, today we’re taking a different approach. We’re going to explore another aspect which makes these amps legendary—their tubes. It’s the guitar amp tubes that give these amps their signature sound, and by focusing on this often-overlooked detail, we’ll see why these amps continue to stand the test of time.

Historically, the 6L6 impact is enormous. Its introduction revolutionized amplifier design, allowing for greater power and clarity, which in turn gave musicians the ability to play louder without losing tonal quality. Before EL34’s, EL84’s, KT66’s, and 6550’s there was the 6L6, the granddaddy power tube.

Renowned for its clear, warm, and open sound, the 6L6 is balanced and rich, offering a round low-end, smooth mids, and crisp highs. This tube excels at producing clean tones that remain articulate at high volumes while delivering a natural, musical breakup when pushed into overdrive. It’s this versatility that makes the 6L6 equally suited for jazz, blues, country, and rock.

The Birth of the 6L6: From Innovation to Perfection

RCA didn’t just make the 6L6—they invented it back in 1936, making it one of the oldest tube models still used today. Year after year, RCA tweaked and improved upon their invention giving birth to the 6L6, 6L6GA, 6L6GB, 6L6WGB, and finally landing at 6L6GC.

It is the RCA 6L6GC black plate variant that became the gold standard for nearly two decades, found in legendary amps like the Fender Twin Reverb, Super, Concert, Bassman, and iconic models from Supro, Danelectro, Gibson, and Valco from roughly 1958 to 1969. Widely considered the finest 6L6 ever made, its impact on guitar tone is undeniable. In just 12 years, we’ll be celebrating its 100th birthday, and this tube is still as essential as ever.

Unfortunate, an NOS pair of RCA 6L6GC black plates, is worth their weight in gold. While well worth it in our opinion, we understand their price does not fit all budgets. The clear second best option is the GE 6L6GC grey plate. These cost substantially less, and will perform nearly as well. Legendary Brands and Variants for Guitar Amps

Among the iconic British amp brands—Orange, Vox, Marshall, and HiWatt—Mullard tubes were the primary choice for their original designs. While Amperex, Telefunken, and Siemens tubes were also used, most of these legendary amps were built around the distinctive tone of Mullards. This made Mullard a key part of the classic British amp sound.

So no surprise, when it comes to EL34 manufacturers, Mullard (and Telefunken) are the gold standard. Mullard EL34s are praised for their mid centric tone, ideal for guitar amps, while Telefunken EL34s are known for their reliability and smooth sound, perfect for Hi-Fi setups.

Though premium NOS options like Mullard and Telefunken can be expensive, vintage alternatives like Siemens, Amperex, and Matsushita offer excellent performance at a lower cost. Make sure to shop for these brands, before buying modern made guitar tubes, if you are on a budget.

With a gain factor of 100, the 12AX7 is the most powerful preamp tube available, delivering the punchy, piercing sound that defines electric guitars. The first boost to your guitar signal flows through the preamp tubes, and that gritty, edge-of-breakup distortion you love happens when the 12AX7 is pushed to its limits. Don’t believe it? Pull the 12AX7 from your amp and hear the difference. Or swap it for a lower-gain 12AT7 (with a gain factor of 50), and you’ll immediately notice a shift in tone, volume, and harmonic complexity.

When it comes to the ultimate 12AX7 for guitar, nothing compares to the Mullard tubes produced in Great Britain during the 1960s. Icons like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Queen all relied on amps powered by Mullard 12AX7s. These tubes were not just any ordinary components, they represent the pinnacle of technology just 6o years ago.

Unsurprisingly, after the 12AX7, the 6L6 came out amongst the top. While it was a close race with the EL34, we all seem to agree that when it comes to guitar amp tubes, the 6L6 is a true icon.

In our recent Instagram poll about the most impactful guitar amp tube, the EL34 emerged as a close contender to the 6L6. While the 6L6 is often heralded as the granddaddy of power tubes, the EL34 has established its own legendary status, particularly in rock and blues contexts.

Developed in the early 1950s, the EL34 was engineered to be a high-performance power tube that could rival the 6L6. Designed for efficient output and versatility, it quickly gained traction among amplifier manufacturers. By the 1960s, brands like Marshall recognized the EL34 for another reason… it’s exceptional distortion characteristics, leading to its adoption in iconic amps that defined the rock sound of the era. This marked a significant shift in how power tubes were utilized in guitar amplification, further solidifying the EL34’s reputation. Amp manufacturers were no longer chasing specifically clean tones.

Discovering A Legendary Fuzz Pedal: The FZ-1A

One day, while rummaging through the garage, my father stumbled upon an old, dusty pedal—a genuine Maestro Fuzz Tone FZ-1A guitar pedal. Excitement quickly turned to disappointment when we realized it had been stripped down to just the foot switch and a couple of jacks. The pedal’s core was missing, and it was heartbreaking to think that someone had overlooked its true value.

At that time, I was just starting to dive into vintage analog gear, so this find felt like a huge win. I assumed I could easily find the original RCA 2N2614 transistors online, but I was in for a surprise. Despite searching everywhere, including local repair shops and online auctions, I couldn’t track down a single one.

After six months of fruitless searching, my dad called with unexpected news: he had found the entire internals of the FZ-1A! We eagerly reassembled the pedal, only to discover that one of the pots was faulty, and one of the 2N2614 transistors wasn’t working. We were back to searching for that elusive part.

Determined to finish the project, I resumed my search, calling every repair shop I could find. After several dead ends, I finally struck gold at a shop in Denver—Electric City Repair had the transistor we needed. With that final piece in place, we restored the fuzz pedal to its former glory, hearing its iconic tone for the first time.

This experience inspired the creation of Fuzz Audio. We realized how challenging it could be to source NOS parts and decided to make it easier for others. Over time, we built a network of contacts and assembled a significant collection of rare transistors, laying the foundation for what Fuzz Audio would become.

Preamp Tube Gain: Tips to Change Your Fuzz Tone!

Fuzz lovers, this one’s for you! If you’re constantly chasing that elusive tone, listen up: the magic of your tube amp isn’t just in the speaker or fancy caps – it’s in the tubes. Vacuum tubes physically amplify your guitar’s signal, boosting it to speaker-moving power. This amplification is referred to as “gain”. Where the fun comes in is that playing with preamp tube gain dramatically alters not only your amp’s character but your fuzz pedal character as well, unlocking a world of new tone!

We talk so much about the mighty 12AX7. The legendary compact preamp tube that made rock and roll roar! Most guitar amps use this sonic powerhouse in their first gain stage (V1) for good reason – it’s loud, clear, and packs a punch. But here’s the secret: preamp tubes are swappable! Wherever you’d normally find a 12AX7, you can switch it out with a 12AU7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AV7, or 5751 without harming your amp.

Combing a lower gain tube with a hot fuzz pedal can be game changing. We have a 1972 Fender Champ here in the shop. And when we run a Big Muff through it, we can never turn the gain of the pedal past a fourth of the way without it getting much to loud. This kind of makes the pedal less fun to use and explore. So, by changing the gain of the 12AX7 to something with less again we can explore the tones of our pedal more!

How Gain Factor Works

Preamp tube gain refers to the amount a preamp tube amplifies the incoming signal from your guitar. Think of it as the tube’s “boosting power.” Tubes with higher gain will significantly amplify the signal, leading to more distortion and overdrive. Conversely, lower gain tubes produce a cleaner, smoother, less distorted sound.

Each type of preamp tube (like the 12AX7, 12AT7, etc.) has a specific gain factor measured on a numerical scale. The higher the gain factor, the more amplification that tube provides. For example, 12AX7’s have a gain of 100, while 12AT7 have gain of 60, meaning that 12AX7’s are louder than 12AT7.

The amount of preamp gain alters how your overdrive and fuzz pedals will react. More gain from the preamp means your pedals will be pushed harder, creating thicker, more saturated distortion. Less gain on the other hand leads to smoother sounds, while simultaneously giving a wider variety of tones because your amps headroom in increased.

Preamp Tube Gain: The Voice of Your Amp

Tinkering with tube types can be as transformative as changing out your guitar’s pickups or strings. For instance, the 12AY7 will push your fuzz pedal into a new realm of sonic exploration, with less gain it introduces more headroom, allowing the true character of your pedal to shine through without being overwhelmed. On the other hand, a 5751 gives you a bit more grit than a 12AY7, perfect for those who want a bit more bite without going full throttle. Each swap is like finding a new voice for your amplifier, one that can whisper softly or scream with the turn of a knob.

12AX7: The King (100 Gain)– The industry standard, known for its high gain and rich harmonic content. Expect serious crunch and saturated fuzz tones.

5751: Tame the Beast (70 Gain) – With about 30% less gain than a 12AX7, the 5751 gives you more headroom before distortion kicks in. Think articulate, slightly cleaner fuzz sounds while retaining warmth.

12AT7: Versatile Tone Shaper (60 Gain) – Often found in reverb circuits, the 12AT7 offers moderate gain levels. Great for vintage-style fuzz that’s a touch smoother and less aggressive.

12AY7: Smoothing Things Out (45 Gain) – This tube has even lower gain, which means you really start having to rely on the gain of your fuzz. This can unlock a whole new world of tone from your pedals are you will have much more headroom.

12AU7: The Low-Gain Champion (20 Gain) – This tube gives you minimal gain, pushing clean tones that maintain pristine clarity. If you really want to hear the full potential of tones your fuzz pedal can make.

Experiment and Conquer

The true magic of preamp tubes lies in experimentation. Trying out different tubes lets you dial in specific flavors of fuzz:

Want tight, focused distortion with plenty of bite? Stick with a 12AX7
For vintage flavored or bluesy fuzz try a 12AY7
Need extra headroom and clarity? A 5751 might be your answer.

Remember that tube amps for the longest time had one goal in mind, clean signal amplification. Remember, tubes are responsible for the amplification of the guitar signal, and that is why you can dramatically influence the gain characteristics of your fuzz by experimenting with different tubes. While there’s no single ‘best’ tube, understanding their different gain and tonal quirks will take your fuzz obsession to the next level.

How Guitar Volume and Tone Control Knobs Work (Part 2)

HOW GUITAR VOLUME AND TONE CONTROL KNOBS WORK- Part 2

In this next part of our guitar knob (volume and tone controls) posts, we move on from talking about pickups and voltage to discussing potentiometers and capacitors, or pots and caps. In an electric guitar, these are incorporated into the guitar itself as components in the signal path between the pickup and the amplifier.

Pots are simply variable resistors. Capacitors have special filtering properties that make them critically important in tone controls. First, we will discuss how potentiometers work in general, followed by a discussion of how they work as volume controls.

Anatomy and Function of a Potentiometer

A three-terminal potentiometer (Figure 3) has two fixed terminals (labeled A and B), and a third terminal typically called a wiper (W) connected to the control knob via a rotating shaft. As the shaft turns, the wiper moves away from one fixed terminal, increasing the electrical resistance (higher resistance = less current flow) between the wiper and that terminal, while moving closer to the other terminal, which results in a decrease in resistance between the wiper and that second terminal.

Resistance Between Wipers and Fixed Terminals

Let’s now consider a 250, 000 ohm (250K) audio taper pot, a type commonly used in guitars, with the control knob set in three different positions. As the shaft is turned to the full 10 position on the control knob (fully clockwise viewed from the front of the guitar), the physical distance between W and B is reduced and the resistance between the two terminals essentially goes to zero. An electrical signal presented at W will therefore readily flow to any device attached to the B terminal. Conversely, the resistance between W and A will be high (250K to be exact), and a signal presented to W will have difficulty flowing to any device attached to A.

Potentiometer and Tone Control

In typical guitar wiring circuits, this type of pot is used for both volume and tone control (the actual ohm values of the pots vary with specific applications, although they are frequently the same for volume and control). Let’s put a couple of these 250K pots into a simple guitar wiring diagram that has one pickup, one volume control (V), and one tone control (T).

This wiring scheme is actually often used with vintage (1950s) Fender basses. (Note: In reality, the body of a pot is connected to ground. This is done in part as a convenient way to create a ground point and in part to reduce noise. In the first diagram below (Figure 5), we have not included this ground point in the interest of making it easy to visualize current flow through the circuit. In the second we have altered the diagram to illustrate the actual ground points).

Capacitor and Tone Control

Note that this diagram includes a capacitor (labeled .047) connected to the tone control. This is the magic component of the tone circuit. If you compare this diagram with that for other guitars, for example a typical Tele or Strat, it will appear to be much simpler. In principle, however, the electrical circuit is the same. The difference is that when additional pickups are added, a selector switch for the pickups is also added, making the circuit diagram appear more complicated than it really is.

Figure 6 shows a component layout that will look more familiar to those who have studied such diagrams in the past. The signal path is identical to that shown in Figure 5. The only difference is that the outer covers of the pots have been used as ground points. This is done both for convenience and noise reduction. We have included this figure in part to drive home the fact that the wiring schemes in guitars are typically much simpler than they appear at first glance.

Signal Path — Volume Pot to Amp

Now, let’s remove the tone control from the circuit so we can focus on how the volume control works (Figure 7). If you refer back to Figure 4, you will see that when the control knob is set at 10 (full volume), there is effectively zero resistance between the wiper (W) and terminal B, but high resistance between W and A, which means that a signal coming from the blue side of the pickup has a direct path to the amplifier with no resistance. On the other hand, if the knob is set to zero, there is high resistance between W and B, but no resistance between W and A. In this situation, the signal from the pickup is greatly attenuated between B and W. Moreover, any signal that does reach W from the B side of the pot will be thrown away because it can return to ground through the A terminal, preventing it from getting to the amp.

How Guitar Volume and Tone Controls Work

HOW GUITAR VOLUME AND TONE CONTROL KNOBS WORK- Part 1

We are going to post a couple articles wherein we discuss how guitar knobs work. The volume and tone controls overlap in terms of principles and electronic components, but there are some important differences. We will start by discussing volume and tone controls as implemented in guitar circuits. Then we will give some examples of how they work in amplifiers, where the basic principles are the same.

The Guitar Pickup

Let’s start this discussion with a simple reminder of what an electric guitar pickup does. In simplest terms, the vibrating metal string near a guitar pickup sets up an alternating (AC) voltage across the two leads of the pickup. Surprisingly, the nitty-gritty physics of how a guitar pickup does this is actually something of a debate. However, the basic idea behind how this happens is not a matter of debate. Namely, an electromagnetic field can be used to create a charge separation (voltage) in a wire that is moved through that field, which in turn can cause current to flow through the wire.

Of course, the converse is also true: a magnet moved near a wire will cause a charge to build up in the wire.

The basic guitar pickup contains magnets (the “pole” pieces) surrounded by a coil of wire. When a string vibrates rapidly near one of the magnets the fluctuations in the magnetic field create a charge in the windings of the coil. There is some debate over whether the role of the string is to create disturbances in the static magnetic field of the magnets or, instead, the string actually becomes magnetized from the magnets in the pickup, thereby becoming a moving magnet that in turn induces a charge across the coil. A third theory suggests the truth is somewhere in between.

Guitar Pickups & Voltage

An important point about terminology: In electrical circuits, current refers to the movement of charges, whereas voltage refers to the potential to create current. Current is analogous to the movement of water through a pipe. In this analogy, voltage is analogous to static water pressure. Voltage is therefore a form of potential energy, while current is the movement of charges through a conductor in response to that potential energy.

Although the abbreviation “AC” is literally derived from the term “alternating current” the abbreviation is also used to describe alternating charges (AC voltage) independent of current flow. Hence, for example, a vibrating string can set up an AC voltage across the terminal wires of a guitar pickup independent of how much current is flowing from that pickup to an amplifier.

AC voltage and current are often illustrated by a figure depicting a sine wave. The figure shown below shows two full cycles of AC voltage. As a comparison, the open G string on a guitar with standard tuning would generate 196 full AC cycles per second.

There is of course another form of voltage and current represented by the abbreviation “DC” (from direct current). DC voltage is the type presented to a circuit by a battery (for example). The polarity is constant. DC voltage and current are critically important in electronic devices, but it is not relevant to the immediate discussion. In a graph of the type shown in Fig. 2 DC voltage would be shown and a straight horizontal line.

7 Important Upgrades You Should Make for Better Guitar Tone

It is not always easy to know what you should change first in your search for “better” guitar tone. With so much information out there on tone wood, string gauge, pickups etc. deciding what to focus on first is challenging.

In an earlier article we described how guitar amplifiers are a critical component with respect guitar tone. Once you are happy with your amp, what other factors can help improve tone?

Here is Fuzz Audio’s list of most important upgrades you should make for better electric guitar tone (from less to most important):

7. Tone Wood

Although the wood your guitar (or amp) is made from can affect tone, it comes in last on our list, as it is generally a minor part of the overall picture when it comes to the final sound.

There is no doubt that different woods produce differences in sustain and timbre. All serious acoustic guitar players know this, but these differences in tonal qualities, for example differences in harmonics, make less difference when signals are moved through guitar pickups. Because pickups are not microphones, they respond much more to string movement that they do to vibrations in the body of the guitar.

Not only are tonal differences that results from different woods subtle but changing the wood on your guitar or amp would be a difficult and expensive upgrade. Best to keep your 62’ Tele all original and look for other things to improve.

6. Cables

Cables beat out tone wood by just a hair, in part because they are so easy to replace. Typically, changing a cable will not have much impact on tone, but a good cable can reduce unwanted noise and increase the clarity of your signal.

Our advice is to ignore expensive cables until you have completely nailed down your sound 100%, as cables will only “clean” up the tone you already have. On the other hand, do not ignore cable quality all together. A decent $10 cable with good reviews should be plenty good for most musicians. Darrell Braun Guitar has an excellent video on this subject that is worth a watch!

5. String/String Gauge

Every guitarist should experiment with strings, not only because they affect tone but also because they change the feel and touch of the guitar. How you attack the strings absolutely affects your sound. If you play with your amp at the edge of breakup you know this well, because when you play soft your amp stays clean and as you strum harder the amp with start to distort. Although string gauge does not change guitar tone a great deal by itself, changing how hard or easy your strings are to manipulate can have a large impact.

Strings make number 5 on the list because they are easy and cheap to experiment with, and you just might be shocked by the results. For more information on strings gauge, Rick Beato and Rhett Shull both have great videos on the subject.

Before We Continue…

This is the point on the list where making the right upgrade can really change your rig’s performance. We note that depending on your particular setup any of the next three upgrades could be the best move to make.

4. Tubes

One of the best decisions you can make when trying to improve tone is to upgrade the tubes in your amplifier. Not only can replacing tubes optimize your amp’s performance, tubes are one of the easiest upgrades to perform.

Tubes are responsible for taking the signal of pickups, which is both low and electronically simple, and not only boosting it to high volume but also shaping it’s tone. As a result vacuum tubes are directly responsible for much of and amps ”noise,” whether good or bad.

Music would be much different today if not for vacuum tubes. We all owe a great debt to these tubes and the engineers that developed and continue to develop tube guitar amplifiers.

Ultimately, tubes can control SOOOOO MANY parts of your tone that it would not be fun to list them all here. Would you like to add or take away low or high tones? Reduce or increase responsiveness? 3. Pickups/Tone Nob

There is just no getting around the effectiveness of guitar pickups at altering guitar tone. To take control of your sound, it is crucial to be aware of the types of pickups you use. The information on this subject is rich. The combination a guitar with a neck and bridge pickup, plus a tone nob gives you a huge variety of sounds available at your fingertips and is undeniably responsible for a large percent of your sound.

If you are comfortable doing basic guitar repairs, changing the pickups is one of the most significant things you can do to improve tone. This is particularly true if you have an otherwise very playable guitar, but the manufacturer has either scrimped on pickup quality or chosen pickups that don’t fit your playing style.

2. Speakers

It’s shocking just how much difference a good speaker can make a in an amplifier. If you are just starting to chase legendary tones, this is something that is certainly worth experimenting with.

Speakers and cabinets make number two on the list. Although they are able to quite drastically change your tone, they are a set it and forget it upgrade. They can, however, be tricky to change in some tube amp models.

1. Pedals

Pedals are hands down the best, most efficient way upgrade the sound of your rig. Do not underestimate simple EQ pedals; they can work wonders for any guitar rig and are a must for serious tone junkies.

Conclusion

Not every guitar rig is the same, and it may not always be obvious what upgrade you should focus on first to improve your sound. To summarize:

It is best to avoid reaching for hi-end cables or place much emphasis on the type of wood your electric guitar or amp is made out from.
Experimenting with strings will help control the feel of your guitar, which in turn impacts tone.

Why You Need a Tube Guitar Amplifier

An electric guitar body with its strings and pickups is only half an instrument. All electric guitar players know that the amplifier is the other half. In fact, from a tone and volume point of view it is the most important half.

If you’re wondering why you need a tube guitar amplifier, consider the sound behind some acoustic instruments. Acoustic instruments are essentially self-contained. They possess a way to create vibrations that ultimately get converted to vibrations in air (sound waves), and they contain some physical material, typically wood or metal but sometimes plastic or other material, that respond to the source of vibrations. Initial vibrations can be created by hammered or plucked strings. This is the case with pianos, guitars and violins, just to cite a few examples. Vibrations can also be generated by a reed or mouthpiece in conjunction with the mouth, as is the case with a clarinet or trumpet.

Do Acoustic Instruments Produce Pure Tone?

The sounds produced by acoustic instruments are complex, and they are unique for each type of instrument and even for each individual instrument. Consider, for example, the note A440, which serves as the reference for tuning instruments in the western world. On a piano, this is the first A note above middle C. This note can be played on nearly all acoustic instruments including all of the instruments mentioned above.

So, why does A440 not sound the same on each of these instruments? Why does a guitar sound different from a piano and a piano sound different from a violin?

The answer is that a note played on an acoustic instrument does not produce a pure tone. Along with the fundamental frequency, in this case 440 vibrations per second, the instrument will produce other harmonic sounds above and below the fundamental note. These secondary vibrations account for the timbre of a given instrument, and it is that timbre that gives an instrument its unique characteristics.

Electric vs. Acoustic Timbre

For acoustic guitars, timbre derives from the type of wood, especially the wood used for the top soundboard, as well as the size and shape of the body and a host of other construction features. For electric guitars, the equivalent of timbre comes largely from the amplifier. The magic of tube amplifiers lies in the fact that tubes create their own harmonics. Solid-state amplifiers can mimic the timbre created by vacuum tubes, but they cannot duplicate it faithfully.

In addition, in the universe of tube amplifiers there are variables that result in complexity derived from different circuit design elements, different preamplifier and power tubes, and even differences among different brands and ages of vacuum tubes of a given type. All of these variables contribute to the richness and mystique of this subject and to the fact that sophisticated enthusiasts can explore this universe in search of the tone that best matches their set of preferences.

Here are some graphic representations that illustrate the importance of amplifiers. These figures will not tell you which amplifier is best for you in a given situation. For that you need to rely on your ear. But they demonstrate the complexity of the important collaboration between guitar and amplifier, a collaboration that is most rich when tubes are involved.

The following figures present spectral analyses using a single note, A440, which corresponds to the first A above middle C on the piano and the fifth fret of the high E string on a guitar with standard tuning. The comparison begins with this note generated with a tone generator, which produces a clean tone without major harmonics.

Here is the spectrum produced by the tone generator. There is a dominant peak at 441 hz with few harmonics. Note that this is a db (log) scale, so the noise floor is exaggerated relative to the actual signal.

Compare the previous spectrum with the spectrum generated by a single note on a Martin acoustic guitar (5^th fret of high E string). Note the increases in the number and magnitude of harmonics relative to the tone generator, as indicated by the vertical lines to the right of the major (fundamental) peak.

Now compare the spectrum from the tone generator with that produced by a tube amplifier, in this case a Fender Telecaster bridge pickup processed through a Champ amplifier. Again, note the increases in the magnitude and number of harmonics relative to those produced by the tone generator.

A440 Composite Waveforms

Another perhaps more dramatic way to look at this same issue is to compare composite waveforms. The image below shows the waveform for the A440 tone generator. It is close to a pure sine wave and as such is not very interesting melodically.

Here is the equivalent waveform on the Martin acoustic guitar. Keep in mind that this is a single note, in principle A440, produced by plucking the high E string at the 5^th fret. Because of the complicated harmonics produced by resonance of the wood and geometry of the guitar, this waveform in much more complex.

Consider the waveform produced by a Telecaster pickup in the absence of amplification. This is a Tele bridge pickup interfaced directly with a computer with no signal processing. It is not as boring as a pure sine wave but it is not very interesting.

Finally, the richest waveform is generated by the Fender Telecaster A440 note (5^th fret of high E string, bridge pickup) processed through a Champ tube amplifier. This complexity is derived from the characteristics of the vacuum tubes in the amp, beginning with the 12AX7 preamp tube.
