The modern production of vacuum tubes is fraught with challenges, often leading to questions about their reliability and longevity. Unlike their robust and enduring vintage predecessors, contemporary tubes frequently face criticism for being manufactured with cost-cutting measures in mind. This approach can result in tubes that are prone to failure, causing frustration among users who rely on them for high-quality audio in guitar amps and HiFi systems. The production process itself is complex and toxic, governed by stringent regulations and requiring skilled labor. These factors contribute to the high costs and difficulties in manufacturing quality tubes. Moreover, the niche market for vacuum tubes means that production volumes are relatively low. As a result, some manufacturers opt to produce these components in regions where labor costs are lower, which raises concerns about labor exploitation and the ethical implications of such practices. This stark contrast with the golden era of tube manufacturing highlights not only the technological but also the socio-economic shifts in this specialized industry.

In the world of electronics, vacuum tubes have been an integral part of many inventions. They are also commonly known as valves due to their role in regulating and controlling electricity.

Valves act like valves on a pipe, allowing electrons to flow through them at different rates while maintaining control over the current. Just like a valve can be used to regulate water pressure or temperature, electronic valves can be used to modify signals within circuits and components.

Ever wondered why vacuum tubes are also called valves? It’s actually pretty cool and has to do with how they work. Vacuum tubes control the flow of electrons, kind of like how a valve controls water in a pipe. This simple yet clever function has made them a big deal in the world of electronics for over a century. In this article, we’re diving into their history and how this unique function earned them the nickname “valves.” Let’s get into it and see why this old-school tech still matters today.

Vacuum tubes work by managing the movement of electrons in a controlled environment, which is basically an empty space or a ‘vacuum’. Imagine electrons as tiny particles that carry electrical energy. In these tubes, when an electric charge is applied, it creates an electric field that pushes or pulls these electrons in a specific direction. This is similar to how a water valve can control the direction and flow of water. By adjusting the electric charge in vacuum tubes, we can control the flow of electrons – turning them on or off, speeding them up, or slowing them down. This precise control is what makes vacuum tubes so useful in amplifiers and radios, where managing the flow of electricity is key. So, in a nutshell, vacuum tubes are like traffic cops for electrons, directing their flow to create or amplify electronic signals.

The invention of the vacuum tube was a pivotal moment in the history of electronics and dates back to the early 20th century.

It all started with John Ambrose Fleming, a British electrical engineer, who in 1904 invented the first vacuum tube, called the diode. Fleming was working with wireless telegraphy at the time and was trying to find a way to convert alternating current (AC) signals into direct current (DC). This led him to discover that a heated filament inside a vacuum tube could detect radio waves. He realized that electrons would flow only from the heated filament, or cathode, to a metal plate, or anode, creating a one-way current.

This groundbreaking invention paved the way for electronic amplification. Just a few years later, in 1906, an American inventor, Lee De Forest, added a third element, called the “grid,” to Fleming’s diode, turning it into a triode. This triode, named the Audion, was the first electronic amplifying device. It could amplify a signal, making long-distance telephone communications and radio broadcasting possible. It is this invention of the grid that gave vacuum tubes their “valve” like function.

The vacuum tube revolutionized electronic technology in the early 20th century. It was the cornerstone of early electronics, leading to the development of radio, television, radar, and early digital computers. Its invention marked the beginning of the electronic age, laying the foundation for modern electronics and changing the course of technology forever.

They remain popular due to their high energy efficiency, which is much greater than that of transistors and other solid-state electronics.

Valves also have the ability to store large amounts of data with minimal power consumption, making them ideal for use in computer systems.

Despite these advantages, there are certain challenges associated with using valves in modern electronics. For example, they are bulky and expensive compared to other components. Additionally, they require a lot of maintenance over time as they can be prone to malfunctioning or breaking down.

As technology continues to advance at an increasingly rapid rate, it’s unlikely that vacuum tubes will become widespread again anytime soon.

Like any tool, they come with advantages including stability and efficiency that make them incredibly useful when it comes to electronic devices. As technology advances, we’ll continue to see more uses for these “valves” in our ever-changing landscape of gadgets and gizmos.

I look forward to seeing how far engineers go in utilizing this remarkable invention!

Contrary to popular belief, preamp tubes are not nearly as finnicky as consumers and bloggers suggest when it comes to testing, matching, and lifespan.

With a preamp tube we need to know two things (after shorts and leakage tests):

Is the tube microphonic (noisy)?

Does the tube PASS a gain or transconductance (Gm)

For guitar and audio applications where you do not need matched sets of preamp tubes, simply knowing whether or not a tube is noisy is half the story to understanding a preamp tube’s health and usability. Knowing a tube’s transconductance or gain is the other half. If you have a preamp tube that is quiet in a sensitive audio device and has a transconductance or gain anywhere in the passing range, you can assume the preamp tube is 100% healthy.

Does my preamp tube have 100% life?

Unfortunately, we have noticed that many tube consumers and sellers equate the strength of tube test values to the life of a preamp tube and/or use conductance scores to explain how a tube will behave in a given amplifier, and this is simply not true. Preamp tubes of the same type can have a wide variety of healthy gain and transconductance scores. For example, vintage Tung-Sol 12AX7’s often have lower “NOS” Gm scores, while Sylvania 12AX7’s score off the chart. Does one type have more life than the other? No!

Typically, the reason a preamp tube fails is due to shock, vibration over time, or overheating. Preamp tubes rarely wear out the way we think of a lightbulb filament wearing out, and healthy preamp tubes should last a lifetime or even many lifetimes with consistent use (if kept in the right conditions).

A few things to note with preamp tubes:

Transconductance and mutual conductance are the same thing

Gain and transconductance are different

Healthy transconductance (Gm) or gain does not guarantee the tube will not be microphonic

Healthy Gm scores do not guarantee healthy gain scores

Matching Gm scores do not guarantee matching gain scores

If you need your tubes to be matched, they should be matched by gain and not by Gm alone

Power tubes are the only tube types where we really need to pay attention to actual tube test values. This is because if you run a power tube too hot (in temperature) you can decrease its life span. Conversely, if you run a tube too cold it can make your amp sound weak, brittle, and just plain bad.

The catch is that not all amplifiers run tubes at the same plate voltage. Plate voltage has an affect on plate current (mA), which we need to pay attention to when making sure an amp and tubes are running in the optimal range (i.e. not too hot and not too cold). Therefore, we need to understand how a given power tube will respond at many different plate voltages and bias settings. Curve tracers are ideal here.

So how do I know if power tubes are healthy?

Power tubes need to run at healthy plate currents at operating (plate) voltages that do not exceed max wattage ratings.

They need to pass shorts, leakage and transconductance tests.

You can calculate “healthy” plate currents by understanding that:

Amps (mA) x Plate Voltage = Wattage (don’t forget to convert milliamps to amps)!

Each power tube has a maximum wattage rating. As a tube’s wattage increases the wear on the tube becomes greater and the lifespan of the tube decreases.

All in all, with power tubes, you need to have a source that knows how to test tubes accurately, and you may need that supplier to be familiar with your amp model as well. Otherwise, you need to know your amp’s operating conditions, and how the prospective tube will perfom under those conditions. Even for experts, there may be some trial and error required.

For rectifier and preamp tubes, unless you need matched sets or tube sections, do not let specific tube test score readings bog you down. Unless the tester is very advanced, the scores do not accurately represent how the tube will function in your device. Instead, make sure that preamp tubes have passed a noise test and make sure rectifiers have passed an emissions test (on a calibrated machine).

Replacing power tubes and understanding “healthy” scores can be more complicated. In short, you must respect the maximum wattage rating of your power tubes, while also making sure they are biased in an optimal range to “sound good” in your amp. You may need to read your owner’s manual or reach out to an expert if you have questions about your specific power tube application.

You can reach us anytime at Support@FuzzAudio.com or call or text 720-505-3927.

An electric guitar body with its strings and pickups is only half an instrument. All electric guitar players know that the amplifier is the other half. In fact, from a tone and volume point of view it is the most important half.

If you’re wondering why you need a tube guitar amplifier, consider the sound behind some acoustic instruments. Acoustic instruments are essentially self-contained. They possess a way to create vibrations that ultimately get converted to vibrations in air (sound waves), and they contain some physical material, typically wood or metal but sometimes plastic or other material, that respond to the source of vibrations. Initial vibrations can be created by hammered or plucked strings. This is the case with pianos, guitars and violins, just to cite a few examples. Vibrations can also be generated by a reed or mouthpiece in conjunction with the mouth, as is the case with a clarinet or trumpet.

This note can be played on nearly all acoustic instruments including all of the instruments mentioned above.

So, why does A440 not sound the same on each of these instruments? Why does a guitar sound different from a piano and a piano sound different from a violin?

The answer is that a note played on an acoustic instrument does not produce a pure tone. Along with the fundamental frequency, in this case 440 vibrations per second, the instrument will produce other harmonic sounds above and below the fundamental note. These secondary vibrations account for the timbre of a given instrument, and it is that timbre that gives an instrument its unique characteristics.

For acoustic guitars, timbre derives from the type of wood, especially the wood used for the top soundboard, as well as the size and shape of the body and a host of other construction features. For electric guitars, the equivalent of timbre comes largely from the amplifier. The magic of tube amplifiers lies in the fact that tubes create their own harmonics. Solid-state amplifiers can mimic the timbre created by vacuum tubes, but they cannot duplicate it faithfully.

In addition, in the universe of tube amplifiers there are variables that result in complexity derived from different circuit design elements, different preamplifier and power tubes, and even differences among different brands and ages of vacuum tubes of a given type. All of these variables contribute to the richness and mystique of this subject and to the fact that sophisticated enthusiasts can explore this universe in search of the tone that best matches their set of preferences.

Here are some graphic representations that illustrate the importance of amplifiers. These figures will not tell you which amplifier is best for you in a given situation. For that you need to rely on your ear. But they demonstrate the complexity of the important collaboration between guitar and amplifier, a collaboration that is most rich when tubes are involved.

The following figures present spectral analyses using a single note, A440, which corresponds to the first A above middle C on the piano and the fifth fret of the high E string on a guitar with standard tuning. The comparison begins with this note generated with a tone generator, which produces a clean tone without major harmonics.
