The story of the RCA 12AX7 really starts with a problem.

Between 1920 and 1940 the world rapidly changed. Radios and telephones were connecting the world. Recordings were coming to life through home stereos on the very first vinyl pressings. In the 1930’s even your car could have a radio!

And what did all of this technology have in common? TTTUBES!

At the time, most equipment relied on much larger preamp tubes like the 6SL7 and 6SN7 (which had gains of 70 and 20 respectively).

These tubes ran hotter, took up more space, and were more expensive to build. But most importantly, the world needed more volume and clarity for communications, recording, and broadcasting. A higher gain tube had to be invented.

So RCA got to work.

Deep in their labs, engineers were developing a new kind of tube. The goal was not just to make another preamp tube. The goal was to make one that could help move electronics into the future.

In 1946 the first RCA 12AX7 was born. A version we only now call, the all mighty black plate. It was a HUGE step forward. It was small, built on a 9-pin base, and had a gain factor of 100. That was a big!

This little tube could do more than any of the larger tubes that came before it.

and that would changed everything to this day.

Because the 12AX7 was smaller and more efficient, equipment could shrink. Designers could build more compact radios, cleaner sounding hi-fi gear, and more powerful guitar and HiFi amplifiers. The tube helped engineers do more with less space. It fit perfectly into a world that was rapidly modernizing after World War II, when companies were racing to build better consumer electronics, better communications equipment, and better audio systems.

But the early RCA 12AX7 black plate was not perfect.

Like all vacuum tubes, it wore out. It could fail. And in that era, that really mattered. Tubes were not just sitting inside guitar amps for fun. They were inside radios, military communications gear, studio equipment, and all kinds of machines people depended on. If you’re chasing better tone from your tube amp, you’ve probably asked:

“Which tubes matter more — preamp or power tubes?

The answer?
It depends entirely on the amp.

Some amps get most of their sound from the preamp stage (the smaller tubes like 12AX7). Others — like the Dynaco ST-70 — are all about the power tubes (like EL34, 6L6, KT88, etc.).

Let’s break it down so you can spend your money (and attention) where it matters.

In Guitar Amps and Integrated Hi-Fi: The Preamp Tubes Matter More

Now flip that: what if you’re using a guitar amp or a hi-fi integrated amp with a preamp section built around 12AX7s.

In those cases, the first gain stage — the first tube in the circuit — shapes a ton of what you hear.

For example:

In a Fender Deluxe Reverb, V1 (the first 12AX7) sets the EQ, response, and gain.
In a McIntosh C22 preamp, the 12AX7s shape the signal before it ever hits the power amp section.

Rectifiers do matter, but not in the way most people think. They don’t change your tone as much as they change how the amp feels. A GZ34 will be tighter and faster with more headroom, while a 5Y3 will sag more, compress more, and give you that softer attack.

In hi-fi gear, it’s less about feel and more about how steady and solid the power delivery is, which can affect things like low-end control and overall stability.

Driver tubes are even more misunderstood. Tubes like the 7199 or 6SN7 can influence clarity and dynamics depending on the circuit, but they’re rarely the reason an amp suddenly sounds completely different. They’re more like fine-tuning.

If one of these tubes is bad, you’ll know—noise, imbalance, strange behavior. Replace it. But if it’s working properly, this isn’t where we would start if you’re chasing better tone.

Not all tube swaps are equal, and where you start depends on the amp in front of you.

A Beginners Guide to Rolling Guitar Tube Amps: V1

Why V1 Matters

CONTROL GAIN FIRST

Start with Gain to dial in feel and build genre.

Gain is simply how loud a tube “magnifies”, or better yet- amplifies, the audio signal. The 12AX7 is special because it has the highest gain of 100. Where the 12AT7’s gain is 60 and the 12AU7 only 20.

For example replacing V1 from a 12AX7 to a 12AU7 will reduce the gain significantly, adding headroom, making it much harder for the guitar signal to “clip” aka breakup. In other words, if you are playing metal- stick with a 12AX7. However, if you are playing Jazz or alternative rock, it could be beneficial to explore your amps full range of tone by swapping V1 for something that will give you more headroom.

Gain by tube type:

 12AX7 — ~100 gain: breaks up early, lively sound

 5751 — ~70 gain: a notch cleaner and rounder, still punchy.

 12AT7 — ~60 gain: more headroom, clean feel.

 12AU7 — ~20 gain: very clean, late breakup, tame tone.

 Pick by goal: more clean headroom → try 12AT7 or 12AU7 in V1; more grit/drive → stick with 12AX7 and change power tubes (part 2).

Tube amps are called tube amps for a reason: tubes aren’t decorations—they’re literally why your guitar sounds amazing.

Your guitar is weak. Not in terms of swagger, but in terms of signal strength, it makes a tiny signal. Historically, this weak signal could only be boosted to audible volume by well… tubes.

When your (weak) guitar signal hits the V1, the first tube in your amp, it amplifies your guitar signal and passes it downstream to the next tube. Because V1, by definition is the first tube in line, small changes made here get magnified through each stage before they hit the speaker. This is why rolling this tube can make one of the biggest differences in how your amp feels and sounds.

THEN EXPLORE PLATE TYPE

Once the gain feels right, fine-tune character with preamp tube era and plate style.

Long-plate 12AX7s tend to sound warm, wide, and a little “bloomy.” Black long-plates lean even warmer and read as more “vintage.” Short-plate versions — like RCA 12AX7A or Mullard 12AX7 — trade a touch of warmth for tighter focus and extra detail.

In general, vintage tubes sound warmer, more natural, and less harsh; modern tubes can lean brighter or brittle, so we don’t suggest rolling modern tubes for this guide.

Part 1 Wrap-Up — Start at V1

The simplest way to roll tubes without getting lost is to start at V1 and choose your gain first. If you want more drive and earlier breakup, stick with a 12AX7. If you want to tame things a touch, a 5751 nudges the gain down. For cleaner headroom and a more open feel, a 12AT7 does the trick, and a 12AU7 is the calmest of the bunch.

Once the amount of gain feels right under your fingers, then chase flavor. Long-plate 12AX7s tend to sound warm and bloomy, black long-plates lean warmest and “vintage,” and short-plates (think RCA 12AX7A or Mullard 12AX7) trade a little warmth for tighter focus and detail.

Make changes one at a time and keep the variables consistent. Play the same riff at the same volume and take a quick note about what you hear—how soon the amp breaks up, whether the feel is squishy or open, if the highs are smooth or edgy, whether the lows feel loose or tight, and how quiet the background is. Two or three swaps like this will tell you more than any spec sheet.

A quick safety reminder before you start swapping: power the amp off, let it cool fully, pull tubes straight out (don’t wiggle), and be sure the replacement has the same pin count and type. If something feels tight, stop and realign the pins rather than forcing it.

6550: Tung-Sol and GE

The largest vintage McIntosh amps—like the MC60, MC75, and MC275—used the 6550 for one simple reason: big amps need big tubes. And when it comes to 6550s, nothing beats the made in the USA originals. Early McIntosh models came stock with Tung-Sol 6550s, widely regarded as the best-sounding and most reliable 6550s ever made.

Imagine this: you’re playing your favorite riff, and the rich, warm tone flows effortlessly from your amp. That sound you love? It’s all thanks to the magic happening inside the tubes. Much like how the right fuel keeps a car running smoothly, high-quality tubes are what make your amp perform at its best. Without them, you’re not just missing out on great sound—you’re holding your amp back from reaching its full potential. If you want top-tier performance, you must pay attention to tubes you are using, just as you would the oil going into your car.

Vintage Tubes and Legendary Amps: A Timeless Partnership

What’s interesting about tubes is that, unlike computers, gas engines, and other technologies that improve over time, the best tubes were actually made in the past. Back in the day, when tubes were the leading technology, companies fiercely competed to produce the best ones—whether it was the best sounding, the longest lasting, or the loudest. This competition pushed innovation to its peak, resulting in superior tube quality. That’s why, if you want premium guitar (or HiFi) tubes, you have to look to history! The finest examples of tube craftsmanship are vintage, not modern.

When it comes to iconic guitar amps, a few names like Fender, Vox, and Marshall have earned a permanent place in music history. While we could debate which are the most important, today we’re taking a different approach. We’re going to explore another aspect which makes these amps legendary—their tubes. It’s the guitar amp tubes that give these amps their signature sound, and by focusing on this often-overlooked detail, we’ll see why these amps continue to stand the test of time.

Historically, the 6L6 impact is enormous. Its introduction revolutionized amplifier design, allowing for greater power and clarity, which in turn gave musicians the ability to play louder without losing tonal quality. Before EL34’s, EL84’s, KT66’s, and 6550’s there was the 6L6, the granddaddy power tube.

Renowned for its clear, warm, and open sound, the 6L6 is balanced and rich, offering a round low-end, smooth mids, and crisp highs. This tube excels at producing clean tones that remain articulate at high volumes while delivering a natural, musical breakup when pushed into overdrive. It’s this versatility that makes the 6L6 equally suited for jazz, blues, country, and rock.

The Birth of the 6L6: From Innovation to Perfection

RCA didn’t just make the 6L6—they invented it back in 1936, making it one of the oldest tube models still used today. Year after year, RCA tweaked and improved upon their invention giving birth to the 6L6, 6L6GA, 6L6GB, 6L6WGB, and finally landing at 6L6GC.

It is the RCA 6L6GC black plate variant that became the gold standard for nearly two decades, found in legendary amps like the Fender Twin Reverb, Super, Concert, Bassman, and iconic models from Supro, Danelectro, Gibson, and Valco from roughly 1958 to 1969. Widely considered the finest 6L6 ever made, its impact on guitar tone is undeniable. In just 12 years, we’ll be celebrating its 100th birthday, and this tube is still as essential as ever.

Unfortunate, an NOS pair of RCA 6L6GC black plates, is worth their weight in gold. While well worth it in our opinion, we understand their price does not fit all budgets. The clear second best option is the GE 6L6GC grey plate. These cost substantially less, and will perform nearly as well. Legendary Brands and Variants for Guitar Amps

Among the iconic British amp brands—Orange, Vox, Marshall, and HiWatt—Mullard tubes were the primary choice for their original designs. While Amperex, Telefunken, and Siemens tubes were also used, most of these legendary amps were built around the distinctive tone of Mullards. This made Mullard a key part of the classic British amp sound.

So no surprise, when it comes to EL34 manufacturers, Mullard (and Telefunken) are the gold standard. Mullard EL34s are praised for their mid centric tone, ideal for guitar amps, while Telefunken EL34s are known for their reliability and smooth sound, perfect for Hi-Fi setups.

Though premium NOS options like Mullard and Telefunken can be expensive, vintage alternatives like Siemens, Amperex, and Matsushita offer excellent performance at a lower cost. Make sure to shop for these brands, before buying modern made guitar tubes, if you are on a budget.

With a gain factor of 100, the 12AX7 is the most powerful preamp tube available, delivering the punchy, piercing sound that defines electric guitars. The first boost to your guitar signal flows through the preamp tubes, and that gritty, edge-of-breakup distortion you love happens when the 12AX7 is pushed to its limits. Don’t believe it? Pull the 12AX7 from your amp and hear the difference. Or swap it for a lower-gain 12AT7 (with a gain factor of 50), and you’ll immediately notice a shift in tone, volume, and harmonic complexity.

When it comes to the ultimate 12AX7 for guitar, nothing compares to the Mullard tubes produced in Great Britain during the 1960s. Icons like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Queen all relied on amps powered by Mullard 12AX7s. These tubes were not just any ordinary components, they represent the pinnacle of technology just 6o years ago.

In our recent Instagram poll about the most impactful guitar amp tube, the EL34 emerged as a close contender to the 6L6. While the 6L6 is often heralded as the granddaddy of power tubes, the EL34 has established its own legendary status, particularly in rock and blues contexts.

Discovering A Legendary Fuzz Pedal: The FZ-1A

One day, while rummaging through the garage, my father stumbled upon an old, dusty pedal—a genuine Maestro Fuzz Tone FZ-1A guitar pedal. Excitement quickly turned to disappointment when we realized it had been stripped down to just the foot switch and a couple of jacks. The pedal’s core was missing, and it was heartbreaking to think that someone had overlooked its true value.

At that time, I was just starting to dive into vintage analog gear, so this find felt like a huge win. I assumed I could easily find the original RCA 2N2614 transistors online, but I was in for a surprise. Despite searching everywhere, including local repair shops and online auctions, I couldn’t track down a single one.

After six months of fruitless searching, my dad called with unexpected news: he had found the entire internals of the FZ-1A! We eagerly reassembled the pedal, only to discover that one of the pots was faulty, and one of the 2N2614 transistors wasn’t working. We were back to searching for that elusive part.

Determined to finish the project, I resumed my search, calling every repair shop I could find. After several dead ends, I finally struck gold at a shop in Denver—Electric City Repair had the transistor we needed. With that final piece in place, we restored the fuzz pedal to its former glory, hearing its iconic tone for the first time.

This experience inspired the creation of Fuzz Audio. We realized how challenging it could be to source NOS parts and decided to make it easier for others. Over time, we built a network of contacts and assembled a significant collection of rare transistors, laying the foundation for what Fuzz Audio would become.

Deciding whether to invest in vintage NOS tubes can be a tough decision. You may hear about their superior sound quality, longer lifespans, and, of course, how vintage vacuum tubes attract babes. But the high price, sometimes reaching hundreds of dollars per tube, can be intimidating and make you wonder if it’s really worth it. So, when should you splurge on NOS valves? In this blog, we’ll explore factors such as the quality of your amp, desired sound quality, and budget to help you make informed decisions when acquiring some seriously awesome vintage valves.

Quality of Your Amp

Invest in Vintage Tubes for High-Quality Amps

Knowing when to invest in vintage tubes and when to go for modern alternatives can help you strike the right balance between performance and budget. If you have a high-end amp, especially a vintage one, it makes sense to invest in vintage tubes. For example, if you own an original Tweed Fender Princeton, using modern tubes would be a disservice to its heritage and sound quality. Vintage amps perform their best with vintage tubes, and installing them can significantly enhance your amp’s tone (and reliability). If your amp is worth around $2500 or more, spending $250-$600 on a set of quality vintage tubes is a smart investment. Not only will they improve performance, but vintage tubes tend to last longer than modern ones, saving you money in the long run as modern tubes often fail sooner. If you plan on keeping the amp for a while, NOS tubes are the way to go.

If you plan to sell a tube amplifier with aftermarket vintage NOS tubes, we recommend either keeping your vintage valves or selling them separately. Most amp buyers do not appreciate the true value of vintage tubes and are unlikely to offer a price that reflects your initial investment. Similarly, if you upgrade your amplifier’s tubes, store the old set safely. Keeping the old tubes can be beneficial for two reasons: they can serve as a backup in case your new tubes fail, and they can be reinstalled if you decide to sell the amp.

While it’s true that RCA’s versions might be considered ‘better’—with their long plates being more refined and less warm, their 12AX7A models smoother, quieter, and more consistent—the difference in quality is minimal compared to the steep rise in RCA’s prices and rarity. Whether you’re budget-conscious or not, GE long plate tubes are definitely worth a listen, offering excellent value and sound quality that challenges their pricier counterparts.

Curious about the source of this sonic magic, we peeked under the hood and, sure enough, found a full set of GE tubes, from the 6L6/5881s to the GE short plate 12AX7As.

Finding these GE tubes wasn’t a surprise; rather, it reinforced our already high regard for them. The short plate variation of GE’s 12AX7 excels in loud amplifiers, maintaining clarity at higher volumes, and delivering a warm yet bright sound that’s perfect for classic rock, blues, country, and honky-tonk.

Fuzz lovers, this one’s for you! If you’re constantly chasing that elusive tone, listen up: the magic of your tube amp isn’t just in the speaker or fancy caps – it’s in the tubes. Vacuum tubes physically amplify your guitar’s signal, boosting it to speaker-moving power. This amplification is referred to as “gain”. Where the fun comes in is that playing with preamp tube gain dramatically alters not only your amp’s character but your fuzz pedal character as well, unlocking a world of new tone!

We talk so much about the mighty 12AX7. The legendary compact preamp tube that made rock and roll roar! Most guitar amps use this sonic powerhouse in their first gain stage (V1) for good reason – it’s loud, clear, and packs a punch. But here’s the secret: preamp tubes are swappable! Wherever you’d normally find a 12AX7, you can switch it out with a 12AU7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AV7, or 5751 without harming your amp.

Combing a lower gain tube with a hot fuzz pedal can be game changing. We have a 1972 Fender Champ here in the shop. And when we run a Big Muff through it, we can never turn the gain of the pedal past a fourth of the way without it getting much to loud. This kind of makes the pedal less fun to use and explore. So, by changing the gain of the 12AX7 to something with less again we can explore the tones of our pedal more!

How Gain Factor Works

Preamp tube gain refers to the amount a preamp tube amplifies the incoming signal from your guitar. Think of it as the tube’s “boosting power.” Tubes with higher gain will significantly amplify the signal, leading to more distortion and overdrive. Conversely, lower gain tubes produce a cleaner, smoother, less distorted sound.

Each type of preamp tube (like the 12AX7, 12AT7, etc.) has a specific gain factor measured on a numerical scale. The higher the gain factor, the more amplification that tube provides. For example, 12AX7’s have a gain of 100, while 12AT7 have gain of 60, meaning that 12AX7’s are louder than 12AT7.

The amount of preamp gain alters how your overdrive and fuzz pedals will react. More gain from the preamp means your pedals will be pushed harder, creating thicker, more saturated distortion. Less gain on the other hand leads to smoother sounds, while simultaneously giving a wider variety of tones because your amps headroom in increased.

12AY7: Smoothing Things Out (45 Gain) – This tube has even lower gain, which means you really start having to rely on the gain of your fuzz. This can unlock a whole new world of tone from your pedals are you will have much more headroom.

12AU7: The Low-Gain Champion (20 Gain) – This tube gives you minimal gain, pushing clean tones that maintain pristine clarity. If you really want to hear the full potential of tones your fuzz pedal can make.

Vacuum tubes, whether they are electron tubes or cathode-ray tubes, can handle the bumps and jolts of regular use but are not invincible. Given that they can get very hot, it’s imperative to let them cool down before handling, but otherwise gloves are only necessary if you are trying to keep your fingerprints off the tubes for cosmetic reasons. If your tubes are on display, it can be nice to have them all nice and shined up.

However, be warned. Tube amps can have A LOT of power running through them and be very dangerous. The other day we were testing a tube and it crumbled/imploded on us as we were taking it out of our trusty ’73 Fender Champ. The glass envelope of the tube simply broke in half as we were removing it, leaving the entire inside of the tube still plugged into the amp and exposed. Luckily the amp was not on, but having something happen like that with the amp on is a great way to get a nice shock or cut.

Lastly, if you are someone like us and has a ton of tubes laying around. Pro tip, don’t actually leave them lying around. We had a friend who is in the same business fall on a open box of vintage 5Y3GT rectifiers that he left on the ground and he took about 50 of them straight into his stomach and gut. Ultimately this left him hospitalized for over a weak with barium poisoning and he almost f***ing died.

Tips for Vacuum Tube Longevity and Cleaning

When it comes to everyday care, a gentle approach is key. Rocking tubes slightly while installing or removing them helps avoid damage. Gloves or a cloth can be used to keep tubes clean but are not necessary; if your hands are clean and dry, they are your best tool. If pins are dirty, we recommend using 000 steel wool or even a Dremel tool which is our go to for extremely dirty examples. Cleaning pins can save pins from corrosion and keeps system free from microphonics.

Before any maintenance, make sure the amplifier is turned off and unplugged, and be wary of stored electrical charge in capacitors. Store your tubes in a safe, dry place to protect them from accidents or extreme conditions.

However, there are many amplifiers out there where this will not be the case and you may not be able to find a blog with the correct information. If this happens, you either need to find the schematic and investigate how the tube is being used in the circuit, or even experiment by removing the tube to see what happens. The Best 12AT7 for Reverb Drivers

A reverb driver tube in a guitar amp makes the reverb effect louder and sends it to the reverb tank, which is where the echo is created. Imagine it like this, when you pluck a guitar string, the tube takes that sound, makes it bigger, and then throws it into a room where it bounces off the walls to create an echo before it comes back to you. This echo is what you hear as reverb, and the tube helps decide how big and rich that echo sounds. This is why picking the right reverb driver is so important.

Great reverb is deep, wide, warm, and natural. So naturally, these are the qualities we look for when picking 12AT7 tubes for use as a reverb driver. Beyond tonal quality, reverb drivers need to be robust, strong, well built tubes. This is because reverb drivers operate under a relatively intense load, which can lead to tube failure over time if the tube is not of a high enough quality. Furthermore, because reverb drivers are somewhere in the preamp stage of the amp, a microphonic 12AT7 will ruin the sound of your amp.

1. RCA and GE 6201/12AT7 Black Plate

Because reverb drivers need warm, natural, robust sounding tubes we typically recommend vintage American made black plate 12AT7. You can read more about black plate tubes in our “Plate Cheat Sheet” but in short, black plate tubes are known for their deep, warm, natural tone so they are a perfect fit. There is only one catch with black plate tubes, if you are moving your amp around often black plate tubes, depending on type, can be sensitive to movement which can lead to failure. This is why top of the line black plate options like the RCA and GE 6201, with plate suspension rods, are superior to all other tubes ever made for driving reverb.

2. Vintage Telefunken and Mullard 12AT7/ECC81

After USA black plate tubes, vintage Telefunken and Mullard 12AT7 tubes are top choices for lush and warm reverb. With a vintage Telefunken 12AT7 you can expect a very similar sound to an American black plate tube, where you will sacrifice some depth and warmth for an extra low noise floor and a more forward reverb sound. Similarly, Mullard 12AT7 may lack warmth compared to the USA black plates, but what they lack in warmth they make up for in loudest and strength. If you think your device has weak sounding reverb, adding a Mullard 12AT7 will bring it back to life.

3. Vintage USA Made 12AT7

If the above tubes are out of budget or seem like overkill, pretty much any vintage US made 12AT7 will be fantastic in the reverb driver position. Many tube junkies might recommend tubes like the RCA black or grey plate 12AT7, and these are indeed great options, but so too are the equivalent examples made by GE, Sylvania, Tung-Sol and Raytheon. If you are stuck not knowing which of these many options to choose, we like Sylvania black plates and GE grey plates over more popular options like RCA and Tung-Sol for this application.

Choosing the Best 12AT7 Tube for Your Phase Inverter

A phase inverter tube serves to convert a single-ended input signal into a balanced, phase-split output. It essentially creates two signals, one that is in phase with the original input and another that is 180 degrees out of phase. This phase-splitting is crucial for driving push-pull amplifier stages, where each signal phase drives a separate set of power tubes. By doing so, it enables the efficient amplification of both halves of the audio waveform, improving power efficiency and reducing certain types of distortion. Phase inverters have the important job of splitting the signal into two parts, and that means the tubes have to be super strong and balanced to get it right. You won’t find any tubes tougher and more dependable than the ones made in Europe, because they’re all about that consistency. This dedication to quality is what puts European-made tubes in a league of their own, especially in high-precision tasks like phase inversion.

2. Sylvania and Philco 12AT7

For the discerning ear of a musician or audiophile, especially when budget is part of the equation, Sylvania and Philco 12AT7 tubes make amazing phase inverters. Unlike their European counterparts, which come with a premium price due to scarcity, these North American tubes are readily available and won’t stretch your finances. These American made tubes are known for their robustness and stability, which translates to reliable performance and quality sound from your amp. So if you’re looking to upgrade or replace your phase inverter and want to do it without significant expense, Sylvania and Philco tubes are a no-brainer! If you are looking for clarity and headroom go for grey plates, if you would like more warmth and a richer overdrive sound go with black plates!

3. RCA, GE & All Other US Brands

RCA is one of our top selling tubes for the phase inverter position, especially in Fender amps. They offer excellent warmth and clarity that can really help give your tube amp some depth and richness. But there is a catch with RCA tubes, they are rare and popular. Therefore, their price is inflated due to demand and scarcity. Are they great tubes and do they make excellent phase inverters… yes! Yet, on the other hand, Mullard and Mazda are supior options for the PI position and they are nearly the same price. Moreover, Sylvania/Philco options are cheaper and will do the job just as good, if not better as well. Beyond all that, brands like GE, Tung-Sol, Raytheon, and Westinghouse all make fantastic sounding options that are very comparable to RCA examples.

(Please note: this logic does not carry over to 12AX7 or other valves. This advice is specific to vintage made 12AT7. Vacuum tube manufacturers each had their stregths and weaknesses when it comes to making particular valves.)

4. Modern 12AT7

Just kidding… There is never any reason to by a modern 12AT7 tube when you can find a vintage 12AT7 for the same price. Try a vintage Japanese 12AT7 if you are still looking to explore reverb driver options.

Best 12AT7 for Gain Stage Tubes

Before delving into the best gain stage 12AT7 tube, it’s crucial to understand what a gain stage tube is and what it does. In essence, the preamp gain stage, typically placed at the start of the signal chain, amplifies a weak electrical signal and boosts it to a suitable strength for further processing through the remaining chain of tubes. This initial amplification is essential for preserving the integrity of the audio signal and ensuring that it can be effectively manipulated and shaped by subsequent components in the audio system, such as equalizers, compressors, and mixers. If you want to add headroom to your guitar amp or just trying to tame it out a bit, installing a 12AT7 in place of one of your 12AX7’s could make you fall in love with your amp all over again and ultimately save you hundreds in not having to buy a new amp just to get some clean tones. If you do decide to go down this route, and you want to add a 12AT7 into the gain stage of your amp, we recommend Vintage USA 12AT7 for the job. Specically, you want to try black plates for extra warmth and depth or grey plates for a little extra twang.

Why vintage USA tubes? In our opinion modern made 12AT7 sound shrill and have too shirt a life span to justify their price. While European 12AT7 on the other hand are just too sterile sounding. This leaves the natural warm and rich sounding American tubes as almost a no brainer choice for most guitar amp gain stage applications. Try brands like Tung-Sol, GE, Raytheon, and Westinghouse… an maybe you have heard before… RCA is pretty good too.

How to Identify Fake Tubes

How to Identify Fake Vacuum Tubes

It doesn’t happen often but this week we got burned on some fake Mullard tubes!

We are sharing our experience not only to save folks from this happening to them, but also because we had a horrible experience talking with the seller “Treasure Cove Paradise.” This kind of interaction is exactly why we started Fuzz Audio in the first place, so we think it is worth sharing.

We typically don’t buy tubes from eBay, but when we saw a listing for 3 testing strong Mullard 12AX7 for $100, curiosity got the better of us and we pounced. Silly us.

A SERIES OF RED FLAGS

[red flag] The label was created 19 days after we placed the order. Never a good sign when you see that, but we understand life happens and everyone gets busy. Luckily, we have no shortage of tubes and we were able to wait.

Unfortunately, the real fun started once the tubes finally arrived (nearly a month later).

[red flag] When we opened the box, we found a ball of bubble wrap, and at the center were our three tubes mashed together in a sandwich bag, glass on glass. Because we were not planning on making a post about this experience, we did not snap a photo, but it sure was worthy of one.

[red flag] Once we were able to remove the mess of tape and bubble wrap, we finally discovered that these were not Mullard 12AX7s, but were instead Japanese Mullard clones! While we are running low on Japanese 12AX7, we would not have paid what we did, as we normally buy these tubes in bulk. Nothing against Japanese tubes as they are awesome quality valves.

Despite the mistake, we tested them, and they tested great! Fortunately they survived their journey even though the sellers packing left much to be desired. Packing tubes isn’t always easy, especially when you don’t have nifty packing like us…

Finally, we reached out the buyer to let him know these were not indeed Mullard 12AX7 but instead Japanese Mullard clones and asked for a partial or full refund.

[red flag] The seller was immediately accusatory and responded with this gem: “Nothing wrong with these tubes. You also used hate speech and discriminatory language against Japanese. I do not wish to do business or speak to you again.”

A GEOGRAPHY LESSON

After making such a statement, I went back to see what I said. I myself am fairly sensitive to discriminatory language of any kind. We referred to the tube as a “Japanese fake.” Was that it?

I responded, telling him that the tubes were made in Japan, not England. He sarcastically questioned our geographical knowledge by querying, “Great Britain is in Japan? Please give me proof these are from Japan. Hammond and Great Britain is written on them. Nowhere does it read Japan.”

At that point, I took this as a learning opportunity and thought I would take the time to explain why they were indeed Japan made.

I sent him photos of a variety of tubes to try to explain how the plates and type of getter are slightly different. I further explained that true Mullard tubes have “B” codes for Blackburn, England. All three of these tubes are missing a “B” code. And lastly, I shared that real Mullard tubes say “Made in Great Britain,” not “GT Britain.”

Ultimately, although his eBay photos were poor and none of the photos showed the “GT Britain” text, which is a giveaway for a fake, we do think he simply made an honest mistake, rather than have knowingly advertised Japanese tubes as Mullards.

Then the Real Frustration Began...

But here is where our frustration comes in. This seller is unwilling to give us a refund, a partial refund or anything of the sort. The seller was incredibly rude, insulting, and accusatory. [red flags] As a buyer, we just wanted to make sure we got what we were paying for, and clearly we were not on the same page. After taking the time to explain our position (and by extension making him a more educated seller), the seller remained unwilling to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution.

The seller, “Treasure Cove Paradise” instead doubled down and told us that he had “sold these to others with no complaints.” There are tens of thousands of these tubes out there that are mismarked with “GT Britain” and it is irresponsible to pass them off as true Mullard tubes. Not all “GT Britain” marked tubes are super nice Japanese Mullard clones either. We have many fake Russian tubes with the “GT Britain” designation as well, and passing these tubes off as Mullards knowingly would be a scam.

Let our experience here be a lesson to all and maybe this is a good time to check your Mullards to make sure they do indeed say “Made in Great Britain” and have “B” codes.

Unfortunately, with vintage tube buying, you need to either have a source you trust or know what you are doing. This is the issue with buying tubes on eBay. There is not much accountability and the process can be frustrating. Here at Fuzz Audio, we strive to do things differently, and our customers are at the heart of what we do. Conclusion

In summary, let’s talk about a few things that make these tubes “Japanese Fakes.” This is a harsh way to put it, but they were fake and were stamped with “GT Britain” to mislead the consumer into thinking this was made in the UK when it wasn’t. It could have even been Mullard themselves who did this, but it doesn’t make it a “real” Mullard tube. You know… the tubes that typically sell for $100/piece, not $100 for 3… and that’s on us.

1. The “B” code — the “B” code is the Mullard factory code for Blackburn, England. As far as we know, the Blackburn factory is the only Mullard factory in England that manufactured 12AX7. If you have one Mullard tube missing a “B” code it could just have been rubbed off. But if you have 3 mint tubes and all three are missing the Blackburn code, it is very unlikely that they are authentic. Furthermore, “B” codes are often etched into the glass so they should always be slightly visible. If your tube does not have a “B” code you need to check for other signs of authenticity.

2. The “Change Code” — all Mullard tubes at one point received what is called a “change code.” This code was used to designate various changes Mullard made in their tube designs, as well as acted as a date code. For instance, F91 is a long plate 12AX7 variation, and the F92 long plate eventually replaced the F91 and so on. People collect tubes based off this code frequently as it is a way to follow the history of the Mullard 12AX7.

3. Plate width and staple type — it’s hard to see in photos, but Japanese Mullard clones have slightly wider plates and different shaped staple holes. We have seen so many tubes we that can immediately tell which are authentic Mullards form those that are clones based on plate alone. This is a more advanced method of determining manufacturer.

4. Getter Type — again not the easiest way to tell a tube is authentic for a novice, but a Mullard tube WILL NEVER HAVE A GETTER AT 45 degrees. Only, Matsushita clones have getters that come off at 45 degrees from the top spacer mica. Unfortunately, in the case of these tubes, they have the typical getter style that Blackburn Mullards also have, where the getter is parallel with the mica. Yet, if you look very closely, you can see the Japanese getter is slightly taller. The devil is in the details!

They must be inferior because no one is talking about them, right? Wrong. In our opinion Raytheon, GE, CBS and Sylvania tubes can go toe to toe with the best of them, and so here is Fuzz Audio’s list of the best underrated 6V6GT power tubes to improve your rig’s performance.

1. Raytheon 6V6GT

The best part about buying tubes that fly under the radar is they typically cost less, and yet they provide performance similar to the tubes the community regards as the premium options. The Raytheon 6V6GT (and GTA) tube is the perfect example of a tube that deserves more attention than it gets. With this tube you can expect rich overtones, shimmering highs and responsive lows. These qualities, coupled with its reputation for ruggedness and long life, makes this valve a classic. If you buy a set of these tubes, you may discover why Raytheon is still in business today-they know how to make quality long-lasting components.

2. General Electric 6V6GT

GE 6V6GT tubes are extremely long-lasting and are built to handle abuse. Similar to Raytheon (and unlike RCA), GE is still a household name, and we can attribute a very small portion of their success to GE’s ability to make kickass vacuum tubes. We have found GE power tubes in Fender, Gibson, Valco, Supro, Airline, Hammond, and Danelectro amplifiers. Tonewise, expect classic robust American guitar tone with lots pronounced lows and highs.

3. CBS-Hytron 6V6GT

CBS-Hytron 6V6GT tubes are typically a bit more rare than Raytheon, GE, RCA or Sylvania power tubes, but when you find a good one, they make amps sound magical. In 1951 CBS acquired Hyrton Radio and Elecronics Co. and for ten years they made quality vacuum tubes under the CBS-Hytron name. CBS may not have been a great company at the time, as they notoriously lacked quality control. But Hytron in contrast was a top-notch tube manufacturer, perfecting their craft of making valves during both World War I and II. Hyrton (pre 1951) and CBS-Hytron tubes are always worth looking at, especially because you can find they for less!

4. Sylvania 6V6GT

Although Sylvania 6V6GT are slightly more popular and more expensive than other tubes mentioned on this list, they must be talked about because they are as good as any tubes ever made. Whether we are talking about 6V6, EL34, or 6L6GC, Sylvania power tubes could outperform tubes the community regards as the best ever, such as the Mullard EL34 or the RCA 6V6GT. What makes Sylvania tubes special is their rugged build quality, which outshines manufacturers like RCA, along with their clean tones and headroom that cannot be beat. The mini but mighty underdog, 12AX7’s are one of the most important devices ever made, yet players and listeners alike consistently overlook them when considering how to improve the performance of their gear. Whether you are replacing the preamp tubes in your amp for the first time or are a certified tone snob (like us), here is our list of the best 12AX7 vacuum tubes ever made to help improve the performance of your gear:

1. The Mullard 12AX7 - Made in Great Britain

Made in England through the heyday of valve electronics, Mullard 12AX7’s are seldom rivaled in both sonic quality and longevity. What really sets these tubes apart, however, is that Mullard preamp tubes are the most consistent valves ever made. That, coupled with their legendary tonal complexities, balance, low noise floor, and longevity make the Mullard 12AX7 the best 12AX7 ever made.

At Fuzz Audio, we test lots and lots of tubes, and with Mullard valves it is not uncommon for every tube in a batch to test nearly identical to one another (with balanced triodes as well). Even more remarkable, when we have lots of used tubes come in, the rejection rate of used Mullard 12AX7’s is much lower than for any other manufacturer. For an example, for every twenty low noise RCA 12AX7 black plate tubes we test, we probably throw away 2-5 tubes. With Mullard 12AX7’s, it would not be surprising to have zero rejects in a twenty-tube lot. Moreover, the Mullard 12AX7’s have the longest average lifespan of any preamp tube we know of, and they rarely go microphonic.

Mullard tubes are extremely well made, but they also sound extremely good in both audio and guitar amplifiers, which cannot be said about all high-quality tubes. In guitar amps, Mullard tubes are punchy, responsive and robust with a midrange kick. In audio applications, they are defined, full, and balanced with a slight emphasis in the midrange. All of these qualities combine to give us the best, most precise 12AX7’s history has to offer.

2. Telefunken 12AX7 TUBES - Made in Germany

You could easily make the argument that Telefunken 12AX7’s deserve the number one spot on this list and in our opinion the only reason why they come in second is because of Mullard’s freakishly consistent build quality. Otherwise, Telefunken tubes are superior to all others, no question.

What truly sets Telefunken preamp tubes apart is the way they sound. Of course, like Mullard, Telefunken’s build quality is top notch, and they too have lower rejection rate and longer life span than most tubes. But what really makes a Telefunken 12AX7 special is its tonal quality.

There are two main types of Telefunken 12AX7’s, smooth plates and ribbed plates. Smooth plates are legendary for their smoothness in tone, and this coupled with their dynamic range, balance and low noise floor makes smooth plates the best choice a listener could make for any HiFi amplifier. Furthermore, because smooth plates sound so smooth compared to any other tube, they are also a top choice for compressor/limiters and microphone preamps. However, the downside is smooth plates can sound a little sterile in guitar and bass amps, and thus they are application dependent.

Ribbed plates on the other hand are a better all-around tube and they sound great in any application. Unfortunately, they are not as smooth sounding as their smooth plate brother, but what ribbed plates lack in smoothness, they make up for in warmth, depth and punch, making them perfect for both guitar and HiFi amps. Beyond that, ribbed plates are an incredibly well-balanced tube with no real emphasis for high, lows or mids. They are also tight, punchy and responsive making them a great choice for bass guitar!

3. RCA 12AX7 - Made in the USA

What do Teletronix LA-2A compressors, Fender Champs, and McIntosh monoblocks have in common? Well… they all relied heavily on RCA tubes through the glory days of their product lines, and because of this, some of the iconic tone we get from these devices can be directly attributed to the classic RCA tubes they used.

In many ways, RCA 12AX7’s are the opposite of Mullard and Telefunken examples. Mullard tubes have a robust midrange, while RCA versions highlight bass and treble. Telefunken tubes are smoooooth or even sterile sounding with a low noise floor. RCA tubes are warmer and tonally more complex, but they are also noisier on average.

RCA 12AX7’s are perfect for any guitar or music production device but they sound specifically good in American made guitar amplifiers. A great tube, that is becoming harder and harder to find as they grow in popularity, the Ei 12AX7 might just be the vintage tube you are looking for. These tubes sound stellar in both HiFi and guitar amp applications, and they have good lifespans. Are Vintage Tubes Really Better?

If you are just getting into vacuum tube amplifiers or simply looking to maintain an amp you have owned for years, when considering what brand of valves to buy there is something you should know about modern vacuum tubes: they often suck, and yes, vintage tubes are really better.

That’s right, we said it, modern tubes, for the most part, are just no good compared to their vintage counterparts. Modern tubes have shorter life spans, sound worse, and are made by sweatshop labor. So why do so few companies have the courage to make these assertions? Because they sell those products, of course, and business 101 says you do not speak poorly of the products you sell.

New Tubes vs. Vintage: 3 Reasons Why Fuzz Audio Hates Modern Vacuum Tubes

1. Modern Tube Manufacturers Use Exploited Labor

At Fuzz Audio, we refuse to nitpick tonal characteristics and manufacturing quality when the first issue we have with modern valves has to do with the factory locations. Russia and China are the only countries producing large quantities of tubes these days, and these countries are not known for protecting the rights of workers, to say the least.

When the vacuum tube was invented, the manufacture of tubes involved the leading technologies of the time. It allowed radio and other electronics to flourish, and all of major electronics brands, around the world, competed to create the quietist, most powerful, most accessible, and smallest vacuum tubes. Factories employed top engineers and scientists to not only invent glorious valves but also to oversee the manufacturing process to ensure quality was achieved. Now compare that to modern day, where the market has been reduced to the niche corner of guitar and HiFi amplifier use, and manufacturers compete to make the cheapest tubes. Unfortunately, the easiest way to make inexpensive tubes is to locate factories where the labor force is exploited and oversight does not exist. The tables below list the two factories that produce most of the new valves currently on the market.

2. Modern Tubes Do Not Last

Unsurprisingly, when tube manufacturers cut corners to save money, quality is sacrificed. Tone aside, modern vacuum tubes go bad at a much faster rate than do vintage tubes, and that alone is a reason to go vintage. We know this because we often sell to folks who are replacing faulty new tubes. Moreover, we test hundreds of tubes that are sixty years old with only around a ten percent rejection rate. Once tested good, vintage tubes rarely go bad unless they are abused. In comparison, we see the same rejection rate, or worse, in tubes that are only a few years old or even brand new. Under stress these new tubes can fail within a year.

When deciding what tubes to buy, longevity or lifespan should always be taken into consideration, especially if you use your amplifier (or other tube device) frequently or plan to keep it for an extended period of time. This is especially important if you are a professional musician who needs an amp to be reliable. We have had countless customers complain that they have had to replace the 5AR4/GZ34 in their Deluxe Reverb several times within a ten-year period, because the modern versions kept failing. On the other hand, we have never had one of our vintage 5AR4’s returned because of failure. They are known to last decades even under heavy loads.

3. Vintage Tubes for Best Tone

Our third and final reason we disapprove of modern tubes is that they lack the tonal complexities of vintage tubes. It is a bit of a mystery, but modern tubes do not sound as good as their vintage counterparts. It could because of a drop in the quality of manufacture, but tube designs have also changed over time, and these changes seem to have an impact on tonal quality.

If you are worried about the price of vintage valves, you might be surprised to know that we carry several options that are close to the price of modern tubes. We guarantee all of our vintage tubes to outperform and sound better than any tube made after 1990.

When Should You Consider Buying Modern Valves?

Although vintage tubes are better in pretty much every way, some HiFi and guitar applications call for tubes that can cost thousands of dollars each. In these circumstances, it is often a good idea to look at modern tubes if your budget does not allow for vintage. Take for example, a Western Electric 300b, which can cost upwards ten thousand dollars for a pair. It’s best not to install those in an amplifier that is only worth 4k or less.

New Tubes vs. Old Tubes: Conclusion

To our benefit, vintage manufacturers raced to create better and better vacuum tubes, and by the mid ’60s manufacturers had perfected the art. These tubes were strong, long lasting, quiet, warm, full, and articulate in tone. In contrast, nowadays companies compete to create the cheapest tubes, locating factories in developing nations so they can pay workers little for hard, repetitive work.

WHAT ARE THE BEST TUBES FOR THE LA2A?

If you are reading this, chances are you already know there is nothing quite like the warm and smooth sound of an LA-2A compressor. However, what you may not know is that your LA-2A is a great instrument for trying different tubes, and you can improve the sound of any unit for relatively little dough by replacing your device’s preamp tubes.

Whether you have fallen in love with a vintage LA-2A unit or a modern clone, here is Fuzz Audio’s list of the best vacuum tubes to improve the performance of your LA-2A leveling amplifier.

ONE 12AX7 tube to rule them all

There are four tubes in the LA-2A, but only two of those tubes, the 12BH7 and one of two 12AX7s, directly influence the quality of the audio signal. Most of the tonal quality in your unit is attributed to one 12AX7. This means that when deciding on which tubes to upgrade in your amplifier, most of your budget should be directed towards one premium long plate 12AX7.

In 1958 leading into 1959, Jim Lawrence, the inventor of the LA-2A and founder of Teletronix, developed and produced the first LA-1 leveling amplifier, which contained RCA black plate preamp tubes. During the next five years, many things changed in design from the LA-1 to the LA-2A, but the choice of preamp tubes did not. For that reason, RCA black plate 12AX7’s are a must try for any serious user as they are the original stock option and were preferred by Lawrence and Teletronix.

The Best 12AX7s for the LA-2A

1. RCA Black Plate – Warmest tube with most depth of tone. Excellent low and high end. Preferred by Teletronix and used in original LA-1 and LA-2A units.

2. Telefunken Ribbed Plate – Sacrificing some warmth for lots of smoothness. This is the second tube to try if you have already tried a black plate.

3. RCA Long Grey Plate – Like the RCA black plate but cheaper!

4. GE Long Grey Plate – Best Budget Option

5. CBS – Second Best Budget Option

Is it Worth Replacing the 12BH7 in my LA-2A?

If you are considering replacing the 12BH7 in your unit, it really comes down to budget versus how much of a “tone snob” you are. Vintage 12BH7 tubes can be somewhat pricey and hard to find from trustworthy online tube sellers. Pricing and supply, mixed with the fact that 12AX7s influence tone more, means that you should focus on finding a nice 12BH7 only once you have nailed down your preference in 12AX7.

For serious “tone snobs,” users who have original vintage units, and folks not hindered by budget, we recommend a vintage RCA black plate 12BH7. This was the valve found in the original units and is what we endorse for those looking to get every ounce of warmth out of their device. Alternatively, an RCA 12BH7 grey plate is another great choice.

Spending $100 on an RCA 12BH7 may make sense if have an original LA-2A hardware worth $10k (or if you are Jeff Bezos), but if you are on a budget and trying to improve the sound of a more reasonably priced unit like a Warm Audio WA-2A, we recommend GE or Sylvania grey plate 12BH7s. These two tubes can be found at around a fifth the cost of the RCA black plates and are still a huge upgrade from any modern-made tube.

The Best 6AQ5 (and the Other 12AX7)

Both the 6AQ5 and the remaining 12AX7 do not influence tone and thus should only be replaced if you are trying to return a unit to 100% stock condition or are replacing a bad tube. The only advantage to using a vintage 6AQ5 is longevity and because you can find a NOS RCA 6AQ5 for $15 this is what we recommend.

The Best Tubes for the LA-2A: Conclusion

Although, there is a lot of great information about Jim Lawrence and the history of Teletronix on the web, articles rarely talk about the vintage tubes used in original units. While it would be foolish to attribute the magic of these leveling amplifiers to anything other than Lawrence’s ingenious use of the T4 optical attenuator photocell, the vintage tubes Teletronix used in the early days pushed the already legendary sound over the top.

Why Should I consider Changing the Tubes in my Marshall Amp?

The type and brand of vacuum tube you use in your amplifier can have a profound impact on its performance. Simply swapping tubes can have a wide variety of effects, such as making an amp less harsh sounding (or vice versa), reducing bass, adding bass, reducing headroom, and so on.

With vintage Marshall amps, the two most important tonal qualities are the strong mid-range and the high gain. This is in contrast with classic American-style amps (like Fender), which traditionally are heavy in bass and treble. You may want to consider tubes that have the desired tonal characteristics of the classic Marshall sound.

BEST PREAMP TUBES FOR MARSHALL AMPS

Marshall amplifiers are loud, really loud. This can be a good thing if you like rock and roll, but if you are a tube, you may be getting rocked too hard by the massive vibrations. Best Overall Preamp Tube: The Mullard 12AX7 (vintage)

The mighty Mullard tube is always the first tube one should consider when retubing a vintage Marshall amplifier. Like Marshall amplifiers, vintage Mullard tubes were hand made in Great Britain, and they are regarded as some of the best vacuum tubes ever made. They were stock in more than 90% of vintage Marhsall amplifiers.

What makes Mullard tubes special is that they have a full and robust mid-range, they are high in gain, they are extremely sturdy, and they are among the most quiet tubes ever made. These tubes and high-wattage Jim Marshall amplifiers are a match made in heaven.

The catch is that the cat is out of the bag with respect to vintage Mullard tubes, and they are becoming more popular by the day. Simultaneously, they are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and as a result these tubes are becoming very expensive. Our advice is usually to splurge on vintage Mullard valves only when retubing classic vintage gear, or when upgrading traditional hardwired clones. Do not spend more money on tubes than you spend on your amp.

For Classic Tone on a Budget: The Matsushita 12AX7

If like many of us you are a gear freak on a budget look no further than vintage Japanese preamp tubes. In the 50’s and 60’s Japan produced very convincing, high-quality clones of legendary Mullard valves. We even refer to these valves as “Japanese Mullards.” It is our belief that Matsushita had some type of relationship with Mullard or at least used the same machines, yet we have never been able to conform this. Some of these valves are even incorrectly marked “made in England,” when they were in fact made in Japan. This is why you should always get your valves from a source you trust.

Believe it or not, Japanese 12AX7’s have even more mids than vintage Mullard tubes, and they are sturdy, have high gain, and are low noise. This makes them a great option for anyone chasing crunchy bluesy overdrive sounds. Their overall quality of sound is great, we wager better than any modern tube, and they have a similar price tag to modern tubes.

For More Depth and Clarity: The Amperex 12AX7

If chasing crunchy mids is not your thing, try Amperex preamp tubes. Amperex tubes are much more balanced tonally, and what they lack in mids the make up for with their clarity, definition and depth of tone.

Best Phase Inverter: Matsushita or GE Short Plate 12AX7

Any vintage short plate tube will suffice, we typically recommend Matsushita or GE short plate 12AX7’s because they are cheap and long lasting.

Best Preamp Tube for High Grain Rock: Genalex Gold Lion (Made in Russia) or Matsushita 12AX7

BEST POWER TUBES FOR MARSHALL AMPS

Power and rectifier tube recommendations follow trends similar to those of preamp tubes. For loud and high wattage amps you need rugged tubes, or the tubes will fail early, costing you money in replacement valves. Some Marshall amps chew through power tubes. If you have an amp that goes through tubes, consider a higher quality tube.

If your budget allows, Mullard would be the classic option, and Mullards are by far the best choice from a longevity standpoint. On the other hand, if you are after a stellar tone on a budget, there are a few other options for improving your sound quality that will not break the bank.

Best Power Tubes for Marshall Amps Overall: Mullard EL34/EL84, RCA 6L6GC, Genalex KT66 (Made in England, Not Russia)

By far the best tubes for Marshall amps, Mullard tubes reign supreme, but they are expensive. For example, Mullard EL34 tubes can run over $500 for an NOS pair. That being said, made-in-England tubes last a long time relative to other tubes, and they can be worth the money, if you are playing your amp every day and need your rig to be reliable.

If your Marshall amp is running 6L6GC tubes, your best options are RCA 6L6GC black plates or Genalex KT66.

Performance on a Budget: Sylvania & Siemens EL34/6CA7

Typically coming in between $150 and $200 a pair, Sylvania (USA) and Siemens (Germany) EL34/6CA7 are great compromises between modern tubes and Mullards. How to Interpret Tube Test Results

HOW TO INTERPRET TUBE TEST RESULTS

If you have fallen down the rabbit hole of NOS tubes and vintage tube gear you have most likely started to wonder what all the fuss is about when it comes to vacuum tube test scores.

With large discrepancies in pricing along with the large amount of amateur tube sellers on the web, understanding tube test scores can be the difference between adding an amazing valve to your collection and wasting $100.

Most of the time, customers need to know two things:

Will this tube work flawlessly in my device?
Will this tube last? Does it still have 100% of its expected life?

One would think this is where tube test scores come in, right?! Well, it depends on the tube!

SO JUST HOW IMPORTANT ARE VACUUM TUBE TEST SCORES?

Knowing how a tube “tests” or “performs under load” is more important for some tube types and situations than others. For rectifier and preamp tubes, test scores are relatively unimportant for basic function, and tubes of different scores can be swapped in and out without consequence (as long as they are working tubes). On the other hand, for power tubes, healthy matching scores can be crucial to your amplifier’s performance.

Here is a breakdown by tube type of what to look for when assessing a vacuum tube’s usability:

Rectifier Tubes

Rectifier tubes are simple in function and therefore the simplest/easiest tube type to test.

To understand a rectifier tubes health you need:

Emissions Test
Shorts Test
Leakage/Gas Test

This may sound complicated, but these tests are pass-fail, and are quick and easy to complete.

For example, an emission test is analogous to checking the filament on a lightbulb. If the filament is intact you get a “good” reading and if the filament is blown you get a “bad” reading.

Rectifier are the only tube types that can be determined “good” through emissions testing. For power and preamp tubes, emissions tests are inadequate as they are more complicated in function and design.

It should be noted that all tubes should be checked for shorts and leakage.

Preamp Tubes

Contrary to popular belief, preamp tubes are not nearly as finnicky as consumers and bloggers suggest when it comes to testing, matching, and lifespan.

With a preamp tube we need to know two things (after shorts and leakage tests):

Is the tube microphonic (noisy)?
Does the tube PASS a gain or transconductance (Gm)

For guitar and audio applications where you do not need matched sets of preamp tubes, simply knowing whether or not a tube is noisy is half the story to understanding a preamp tube’s health and usability. Knowing a tube’s transconductance or gain is the other half. If you have a preamp tube that is quiet in a sensitive audio device and has a transconductance or gain anywhere in the passing range, you can assume the preamp tube is 100% healthy.

Does my preamp tube have 100% life?

Unfortunately, we have noticed that many tube consumers and sellers equate the strength of tube test values to the life of a preamp tube and/or use conductance scores to explain how a tube will behave in a given amplifier, and this is simply not true. Preamp tubes of the same type can have a wide variety of healthy gain and transconductance scores. For example, vintage Tung-Sol 12AX7’s often have lower “NOS” Gm scores, while Sylvania 12AX7’s score off the chart. Does one type have more life than the other? No!

Typically, the reason a preamp tube fails is due to shock, vibration over time, or overheating. Preamp tubes rarely wear out the way we think of a lightbulb filament wearing out, and healthy preamp tubes should last a lifetime or even many lifetimes with consistent use (if kept in the right conditions).

A few things to note with preamp tubes:

Transconductance and mutual conductance are the same thing
Gain and transconductance are different
Healthy transconductance (Gm) or gain does not guarantee the tube will not be microphonic
Healthy Gm scores do not guarantee healthy gain scores
Matching Gm scores do not guarantee matching gain scores
If you need your tubes to be matched, they should be matched by gain and not by Gm alone

Some high-end audio amplifiers and studio recording equipment require matched sets of preamp tubes. For the most sensitive of these applications you need gain matched sets. When you match by gain, you are guaranteeing the output signal strength from each tube is equal. This cannot be achieved by matching by transconductance.

Fuzz Audio tests all preamp tubes for shorts, leakage, transconductance, gain and noise.

Power Tubes

Power tubes are the only tube types where we really need to pay attention to actual tube test values. This is because if you run a power tube too hot (in temperature) you can decrease its life span. Conversely, if you run a tube too cold it can make your amp sound weak, brittle, and just plain bad.

The catch is that not all amplifiers run tubes at the same plate voltage. Plate voltage has an affect on plate current (mA), which we need to pay attention to when making sure an amp and tubes are running in the optimal range (i.e. not too hot and not too cold). Therefore, we need to understand how a given power tube will respond at many different plate voltages and bias settings. Curve tracers are ideal here.

So how do I know if power tubes are healthy?

Power tubes need to run at healthy plate currents at operating (plate) voltages that do not exceed max wattage ratings.
They need to pass shorts, leakage and transconductance tests.

You can calculate “healthy” plate currents by understanding that:

Amps (mA) x Plate Voltage = Wattage (don’t forget to convert milliamps to amps)!

Each power tube has a maximum wattage rating. As a tube’s wattage increases the wear on the tube becomes greater and the lifespan of the tube decreases.

All in all, with power tubes, you need to have a source that knows how to test tubes accurately, and you may need that supplier to be familiar with your amp model as well. Otherwise, you need to know your amp’s operating conditions, and how the prospective tube will perfom under those conditions. Even for experts, there may be some trial and error required.

VACUUM TUBE TEST SCORES: CONCLUSION

For rectifier and preamp tubes, unless you need matched sets or tube sections, do not let specific tube test score readings bog you down. Unless the tester is very advanced, the scores do not accurately represent how the tube will function in your device. Instead, make sure that preamp tubes have passed a noise test and make sure rectifiers have passed an emissions test (on a calibrated machine).

Replacing power tubes and understanding “healthy” scores can be more complicated. In short, you must respect the maximum wattage rating of your power tubes, while also making sure they are biased in an optimal range to “sound good” in your amp. RCA is King, GE is Queen

When it comes to vintage Fender amps and really any classic USA guitar circuit, RCA is always the first brand that should come to mind. This is because for any given Fender amp made prior to 1965 there is an 80+% chance your amp originally came stock with RCA tubes.

Because Fender relied heavily on the use of RCA tubes up until about 1965, they should always be considered when upgrading tubes in a Fender amp or restoring an amp back to original condition.

However, that being said, other USA manufactures should not be overlooked.

Remember how we said, “80+% chance your amp originally came stock with RCA tubes?” Well, the other 15-20% would be found with GE tubes. GE 12AX7s in particular are a great budget valve to get your amp running optimally without burning a hole in your wallet. Read our article the most underrated tube of all time here! Spoiler alert… its GE!

The Best Tubes for Fender Amps by Era

Tweed Era (1948 - 1960)

Single speaker tweed amps deserve long plate preamp tubes. If you play with lots of distortion, fuzz or like lots of warmth; black plates are by far the best tubes for tweed Fender amps.

Black and Brownface Era (1960 - 1967)

As amps started to get bigger, tube plates became smaller to compensate for “noise floor” with the larger Fender amps of the 60’s.

If you have a blackface amp with one speaker, long plate preamp tubes are still the way to go.

On the other hand, if your amp has more than one speaker, and you want your amplifier to be quiet, you may want to look at tubes like the 12AX7A or 7025. Both RCA and GE have great versions of these tubes. For power tubes, hands down best performers are RCA black plates.

Silverface to Modern Era (1967 - Present)

Early Silverface amps would have been found with the last batches of the classic RCA tubes of the Blackface Era. Yet by 1970 the glory days of RCA were over, and we see Fender start to plug in Sylvania/Philips Preamp tubes, along with GE pre and power tubes. These tubes are typically branded “Fender” and sound less warm than earlier versions.

Thus, in our opinion the best vacuum tubes for Fender amps were made pre 1970, and because of this, we are left with the options already mentioned if you are chasing legendary tone.

If you are trying to return your Silverface amp back to 100% stock components you would have several options, as Fender was inconsistent with the tubes they used in this era.

The Vacuum Tube Plate Cheat Sheet

Did you know? The type of “plate” in your vacuum tube can determine your amplifier’s tone and performance. Although it may seem like something to ignore, plates can govern things such as quietness, bass & treble range, longevity, and tonal quality. The type of plate can also reflect the era of manufacture. This cheat sheet covers what to expect with each type of plate, and it will help you determine which vacuum tubes are right for you.

Gray Plate vs. Black Plate

The color of a vacuum tube’s plate can indicate both the tonal qualities of the tube and the year it was made. Generally speaking, compared to black-plate tubes, grey plates come with less noise, more treble and balance, more headroom (clean before breakup starts), less depth of tone, and a manufacture date after 1957 or 1958. Black plates, on average, have a slightly noisier idle, better low end, less headroom (they break up sooner), more depth of tone, and a manufacture date before 1960. We acknowledge that there are outliers to these generalizations.

Long Plate vs. Short Plate Tubes

Just as plate color provides a clue to a tube’s sound, so does plate length. Typically, when vacuum tube enthusiasts talk about plate length, they are referring to preamp tubes, especially 12AX7/ECC83 tubes.

Long plates are the older type of plate made between 1940 and 1965. They are slightly noisier, better in the low end, and come with less headroom than their short-plate siblings. If you are now saying, wait a minute, this sounds familiar, you are correct! Black plates are almost always long plates.

Short Plates are more recent, manufactured post 1960 and into the 70’s, are less noisy, are better in highs and balance, offer more headroom, and typically last longer than tubes with long plates. Along with greater longevity, short plates are less susceptible to microphonics and “tube rattle”. In fact, if you have a noisy amp or have issues with “tube rattle,” short plates are an excellent bet to combat the problem.

Black Plates

We recommend black plates for vintage tweed amps, as they were most commonly stock in amps from the 1950s. These are typically best for single-speaker amps. Remember, black plates are almost always long plates.

Tonal Qualities: Lots of low end (Bass), less headroom (breakup happens sooner), and higher tube noise (but still less than most modern tubes).

Best for: Blues, hard rock, rock & roll, fuzzzzzzz stuff, rock bass guitar, funk bass, and vocal mics to add depth and low end.

Grey Long Plates

Tonal Qualities: Average headroom, average noise, great bass and treble, great clean and dirty sounds, and lots of depth of tone and bass (but less than black plates). More noise and less headroom than short plates. We consider the long grey plate, the “Goldilocks Tube,” to have qualities between long black plates and short grey plates. Typically this is our recommendation for single-speaker amps or for folks who are new to tubes!

Best for: Blues, rock, jazz, funk, classic rock, fuzz and pretty much anything!!!

Grey Short Plates

Tonal Qualities: Added headroom (more clean before breakup), great high-end (treble), less depth of tone, better clean sound, less bass, nice and tight lows too, punchy, responsive, and least amount of noise. These are best for 2-8 speaker amplifiers like Twin Reverbs, Vox AC30, Marshall Plexi’s etc, and for sensitive audio applications.

Best for: Jazz, clean guitar, classic rock, punchy tight bass, jazz bass, audio, vocal mic and noise-sensitive devices.

When Should You Replace Your Vacuum Tubes?

WhEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR VACUUM TUBES?

The vacuum tubes in your amplifier are the most critical components. Without them, your amplifier will not power on, nor will it allow any signal to pass through to the speaker or output jack. Not only are tubes an integral part of the signal path, in a guitar amp they are responsible for both amplification and tone. In the audio world, they are responsible for amplification, fidelity, noise level, and intangible qualities related to tone. All of this means that the health and performance of your amplifier depend on the condition of its tubes. Because your amplifier is so valve dependent, there are many reasons why replacing your tubes might be necessary to keep your amplifier functioning as it should. We will break down our reasons (for replacing tubes) into three categories, starting with the most obvious.

A Malfunctioning Amplifier

One bad tube (let alone a few) can create an abundance of issues. The result can be quite a headache if you do not have a replacement set of tubes or a tube tester on hand. The most common reason for starting an inquiry into buying a new tube, a new set of tubes, or even a tube tester, involves improving amplifier health.

Some of the main symptoms of a bad tube include loud hiss, hum, white noise, popping or screeching. These issues can often be heard even at low volume, and when bad enough such noises can make your amp unplayable. A few months ago, we had a vintage amp come through the door with a bad preamp tube. The amp had such a constant loud noise that it could be used as a tremolo, metronome, drum machine, or a steam-engine sound effect. This type of failure is cause by a microphonic tube, and it is one of easiest issues to diagnose.

Recommended Tubes for Reducing Noise:

NOS 7025s of all makes.

GE or RCA short plates.

Mullard and Telefunken 12AX7s.

Tone and Performance

The next reason to think about changing your tubes is to improve the tone and overall performance of your amplifier. Each tube, modern and vintage alike, comes with unique tonal qualities that can alter how your amplifier sounds and feels. Think of it as analogous to acoustic guitars. Sure, all acoustic guitars sound, well, like acoustic guitars; but they can vary enormously with respect to frequency balance, sustain, harshness, etc., even within a given model. It is generally not hard to tell a “cheap” guitar from a high-end one. Tubes are much like this. You can have an array of tubes, ranging from low-end ($) to high-end ($), and more often than not it is the higher end tubes that are regarded as “better.”

Guitarists who play a lot, especially with the same amplifier, will be able to tell an immediate difference in tone, volume, and headroom (referring to how loud an amp will get before breakup/distortion) between a bottom-end modern tube and a top-end vintage tube. However, it is important to note that results can depend greatly on the amplifier you are using and your ability and confidence in choosing the correct tube. Harmonic and distortion characteristics relate in part to the “amplification factor” or gain of a given tube or type of tube. To put this into context, the 12AX7 has a gain or “amplification factor” of 100 (on average). Compare this to the 12AT7 which has a gain factor of 60 (again on average for new tubes). The 12AX7 is the producing 40% more gain than the 12AT7. Thus, swapping out a 12AX7 for a 12AT7 will produce some interesting results!

Rock legend, Stevie Ray Vaughn famously used 5751 tubes in his Fender tweed style amps to achieve his creamy, heavy and thick edge of breakup/overdrive sound. The 5751 has a gain factor of 70, right in between the 12AX7 and 12AT7, so for some guitarists this tube makes a lot of sense as a substitute. Your volume may suffer but just turn the dial up a bit and you’ve got a whole new amp.

While gain is an important factor in determining tone and volume, there are other important factors, many of which remain somewhat mystical. Two tubes of similar type and gain, but with different construction characteristics can and will sound very different. For example, a vintage RCA black plate will produce a sound quality very different from many modern tubes with similar gain values, as a result of the different harmonic characteristics of the tubes combined with the operating conditions of the amplifier.

Restoration and Cloning

Swapping guitar tubes for restoration purposes can make a ton of sense in the right circumstances. If you are interested in returning an amplifier to its original stock condition or are making a truly accurate clone, using period and brand accurate tubes is one of the best ways to make sure your amplifier is performing as it would have decades ago.

This tube buyers guide will not go out of its way to promote NOS (new old stock) tubes over modern tubes, but NOS tubes can have special value based on both tone and authenticity. If someone has gone to the expense and trouble to acquire or restore a vintage amplifier, or if they desire to have an authentic a clone, it makes sense to invest in stock (original for that model) tubes. Not only do they improve resale value, but NOS tubes can be a key element in achieving vintage sound. Modern tubes are great for many types of applications, but they are not great at sounding like vintage tubes.

There are exceptions to the rule that vintage amps require vintage tubes. Some amplifiers require very specific, very expensive NOS tubes. When this is the case, it can make some sense to compromise by using used vintage tubes, reissue tubes, or modern “boutique” variants.
