A Beginners Guide to Rolling Guitar Tube Amps: V1

Why V1 Matters

CONTROL GAIN FIRST

Start with Gain to dial in feel and build genre.

Gain is simply how loud a tube “magnifies”, or better yet- amplifies, the audio signal. The 12AX7 is special because it has the highest gain of 100. Where the 12AT7’s gain is 60 and the 12AU7 only 20.

For example replacing V1 from a 12AX7 to a 12AU7 will reduce the gain significantly, adding headroom, making it much harder for the guitar signal to “clip” aka breakup. In other words, if you are playing metal- stick with a 12AX7. However, if you are playing Jazz or alternative rock, it could be beneficial to explore your amps full range of tone by swapping V1 for something that will give you more headroom.

Gain by tube type:

 12AX7 — ~100 gain: breaks up early, lively sound

 5751 — ~70 gain: a notch cleaner and rounder, still punchy.

 12AT7 — ~60 gain: more headroom, clean feel.

 12AU7 — ~20 gain: very clean, late breakup, tame tone.

 Pick by goal: more clean headroom → try 12AT7 or 12AU7 in V1; more grit/drive → stick with 12AX7 and change power tubes (part 2).

Tube amps are called tube amps for a reason: tubes aren’t decorations—they’re literally why your guitar sounds amazing.

Your guitar is weak. Not in terms of swagger, but in terms of signal strength, it makes a tiny signal. Historically, this weak signal could only be boosted to audible volume by well… tubes.

When your (weak) guitar signal hits the V1, the first tube in your amp, it amplifies your guitar signal and passes it downstream to the next tube. Because V1, by definition is the first tube in line, small changes made here get magnified through each stage before they hit the speaker. This is why rolling this tube can make one of the biggest differences in how your amp feels and sounds.

Once the gain feels right, fine-tune character with preamp tube era and plate style.

Long-plate 12AX7s tend to sound warm, wide, and a little “bloomy.” Black long-plates lean even warmer and read as more “vintage.” Short-plate versions — like RCA 12AX7A or Mullard 12AX7 — trade a touch of warmth for tighter focus and extra detail.

In general, vintage tubes sound warmer, more natural, and less harsh; modern tubes can lean brighter or brittle, so we don’t suggest rolling modern tubes for this guide.

Part 1 Wrap-Up — Start at V1

The simplest way to roll tubes without getting lost is to start at V1 and choose your gain first. If you want more drive and earlier breakup, stick with a 12AX7. If you want to tame things a touch, a 5751 nudges the gain down. For cleaner headroom and a more open feel, a 12AT7 does the trick, and a 12AU7 is the calmest of the bunch.

Once the amount of gain feels right under your fingers, then chase flavor. Long-plate 12AX7s tend to sound warm and bloomy, black long-plates lean warmest and “vintage,” and short-plates (think RCA 12AX7A or Mullard 12AX7) trade a little warmth for tighter focus and detail.

Make changes one at a time and keep the variables consistent. Play the same riff at the same volume and take a quick note about what you hear—how soon the amp breaks up, whether the feel is squishy or open, if the highs are smooth or edgy, whether the lows feel loose or tight, and how quiet the background is. Two or three swaps like this will tell you more than any spec sheet.

A quick safety reminder before you start swapping: power the amp off, let it cool fully, pull tubes straight out (don’t wiggle), and be sure the replacement has the same pin count and type. If something feels tight, stop and realign the pins rather than forcing it.

While RCA tubes dominated from 1960 to 1965, GE tubes were a staple both before and after that period during Fender’s most iconic eras. Many folks back then might tell you they didn’t pay much attention to the tube brand—if the amp worked, that was enough. But truth be told, companies like Fender were constantly evaluating tubes that would deliver the best sound. Tubes are directly responsible for sound amplification, after all, and making amps that were loud yet clear was crucial. If Fender trusted GE tubes in their amps for over two decades of innovation, that really says something. Underrated? Definitely. The GE 12AX7 is perhaps the most underrated tube of all time, quietly powering some of the best sounds in the industry.

The Four Types of GE 12AX7’s and How to Choose the Right One

Like with most vintage tubes, the GE 12AX7 took several forms over the years as GE made “improvements” to their design. Just like big tech today compates to make the smallest, fastest phones and computers, vacuum tubes were the leading technology of the day. BrandS like RCA, Mullard and GE all competed to create the ultimate long lasting low noise tube, and in doing so, they created variations in the tubes they made throughout the years. The trick when it comes to buying (and selling) vintage vacuum tubes is to understand the stregths and weaknesses of each tube type.

Unfortunately, we all have to face the music at some point on our musical journey and realize modern tubes are just not any good. This is why, if you truly love your anolog device and value your tone, you have to get rid of the Chinese tubes clogging it up. And while, yes, pretty much any vintage valve is superior to any modern made example, understanding the difference long plates, black plates and short plates among other details will help you tailor your devices sound to your preferences, elevating your experience to a whole new level.

We believe GE swiftly got to work on their own version, evidenced by our encounters with KENRAD carbonized black plate tubes, marked as early as 1949. Acquired by GE in 1945, KENRAD’s quick adaptation just two years post-RCA’s launch suggests a rapid reverse engineering feat.

GE’s 12AX7 black plates are not just vintage; they’re practically historical relics. The earliest versions, carbonized black plates, were produced from around 1949 to the early 1950s. Following those, the typical black plate versions appeared from 1953 to 1957. These tubes are notoriously hard to come by, particularly in low noise variations that break up early and exude a warm, rich tone—qualities that make them highly sought after. At Fuzz Audio, we pride ourselves on offering only these low noise variants, despite their scarcity. It’s been about four months since we last had a usable GE 12AX7 black plate in stock, and it’s always uncertain when the next batch will surface.

The influence of GE’s 12AX7 black plates extended deep into the fabric of American music, particularly through their use in early guitar amplifiers from 1950’s to 1957. These tubes, embodying a rich, warm sound and characteristic early break-up, were pivotal in defining the sonic landscape of that era. Notably, they powered iconic amplifiers such as the Fender 5D2 Princeton, which emerged in 1955. This relationship between GE tubes and legendary American amps not only fueled the sounds of rock and blues but also solidified the reputations of the equipment that bore them.

The Most Underrated Tube of All time: The GE Long Plate 12AX7 (1958-1964)

When we talk about underrated tubes, the GE 12AX7 long plate truly stands out. At Fuzz Audio, we’re captivated by the warm, deep tones it delivers, making it one of our favorites for both hi-fi gear and guitar amplifiers. So that is why it disappoints us to find them selling less often then they deserve.

Produced between 1958 and 1964(ish), the GE long plate 12AX7s were ubiquitous in the late ’50s and early ’60s, finding their way into everything from lab and medical equipment to household appliances, including radios, stereo units, and musical instruments like Hammond or Baldwin organs. These tubes were among the most prolifically produced of the era.

So, why isn’t there more buzz around these tubes? It comes down to three letters: RCA. Overshadowed by this industry giant, GE tubes often go unnoticed. While it’s true that RCA’s versions might be considered ‘better’—with their long plates being more refined and less warm, their 12AX7A models smoother, quieter, and more consistent—the difference in quality is minimal compared to the steep rise in RCA’s prices and rarity. Whether you’re budget-conscious or not, GE long plate tubes are definitely worth a listen, offering excellent value and sound quality that challenges their pricier counterparts.

GE 12AX7 Short Plate: Second Most Underrated Tube of All Time (1965-1985)

A few years back, a 1964 Fender Concert Brownface amp walked through our doors—pristine, with all its original tubes, and seemingly untouched by time. Once we revived it on a variac and powered it up, we were struck by the most beautiful clean tone we had ever encountered. It was like hearing a grand organ resonate through a vast hall—absolutely astounding. Curious about the source of this sonic magic, we peeked under the hood and, sure enough, found a full set of GE tubes, from the 6L6/5881s to the GE short plate 12AX7As.

Finding these GE tubes wasn’t a surprise; rather, it reinforced our already high regard for them. The short plate variation of GE’s 12AX7 excels in loud amplifiers, maintaining clarity at higher volumes, and delivering a warm yet bright sound that’s perfect for classic rock, blues, country, and honky-tonk.

The GE short plate represents the zenith of GE’s 12AX7 production—being their most reliable and lowest noise tube. These tubes, which include models labeled 12AX7, 12AX7A, 12AX7WA, and 7025, so do make sure to check the plate type rather than relying on the tube code.

Ideal as phase inverters, these tubes are renowned for their durability and consistent balance. For those using HIFI amplifiers and seeking precise articulation over warmth and depth, the GE short plate 12AX7s are an excellent choice.

A quick note:

All of this logic carries over to GE 12AU7 and 5751. These are remarkable tubes that deserves respect. For GE 12AU7, they had each iteration of the same tubes, meaning 12AU7 black plates, long plates, and short plates. We can assume GE short plates 12AU7 will be less noisy than GE black plate 12AU7 and so on.

You are going to want an amp with smaller power tubes like a 6V6GT, 6AQ5, or El84. Likewise, if you are playing to a crowed of ten thousand and you need your bass to be crisp and clear… you are going to need 6550 tubes, and lots of them.

Power Tubes: Clarity and Dynamics

Different power amp tubes influence headroom, the amp’s clean output before distortion sets in. Tubes with higher headroom offer a wider dynamic range, capturing the subtle nuances of your playing, while those with lower headroom break up earlier, adding a touch of grit and compression.

So when you are shopping for an amp, the larger the power tubes you see, the louder and cleaner the amp will be!

EL34:Known for their tight, punchy sound and clear articulation, EL34 have been famously used by amp manufacturers like Marshall, Orange, Hi Watt and many more. These manufactures use these tubes intentionally as they help craft each amps unique tonal signature. What makes these tubes so popular is their sharp, responsive, precise, piercing, and when pushed their gritty tone making them ideal for blues, funk, rock and other genres. Their breakup tends to be more focused and controlled than 6L6.

6L6: These tubes are prized for their rich, warm tone with a smooth, singing distortion. They excel in classic rock, jazz, and country music where clean tones must be brilliant and clear, delivering a powerful musical presence. 6L6 tubes sound wide and lush compared to EL34/6CA7. Famously used in amps like the best sounding clean amps of all time like Fender Twin Reverbs, Showman’s, Bandmasters, etc.

6550 & KT88: The largest and most powerful tubes of the bunch. 6550’s and KT88’s offer a powerful blend of warmth and clarity. These tubes are best suited for devices that need tons of loud clear and clean headroom, and that is why we only see them in the largest of rigs, like the Ampeg SVT or in HiFi units . Ultimately, 6550 and KT88 deliver a bold, assertive sound with a touch of smooth compression.

Vintage Vacuum Tube Handling: Debunking the Glove Myth

When it comes to vacuum tubes, let’s face it… to most of us they are a complete mystery- how they work, how to handle them, what they are good for. If we told you right now that valves were alien technology, 20% of our readers might just believe it. Heck, even for true analog gear dorks like us, we are constantly learning new things about tubes and their application. That is why we are going to start a new “Vacuum Tubes Myths” blog series to help combat what we call “filament fables” and their tendency to distort the truth about these classic components with a dose of (electrifying) reality.

The handling of vintage vacuum tubes is a topic surrounded by myths and misconceptions. To set the record straight, here’s a succinct guide to dealing with these delicate yet robust pieces of technology.

Does Oil Ruin Vacuum Tubes? - FILAMENT FABLE #1

Despite what you may have heard, the oil from your fingers will not damage the glass of a vacuum tube or affect its performance. Vintage tubes, particularly those with ink labels, are delicate in other ways. The ink can easily come off—especially if it gets wet—so when handling or shipping these tubes, it’s wise to avoid touching the labeling. When opening a vintage box, do so with care to preserve its integrity, as collectors often value the packaging just as much as the tube. We see tubes with layers of dirt and grime caked onto them all the time, they work and will continue to work just fine, yet we normally clean them of course.

Remember vacuum tubes get hot, they are designed that way, so a little oil is not going to hurt anything. In fact, maybe that’s that delicious smell we get when those tubes we love heat up. Just kidding

Safety First: How to Handle Tubes Properly

Vacuum tubes, whether they are electron tubes or cathode-ray tubes, can handle the bumps and jolts of regular use but are not invincible. Given that they can get very hot, it’s imperative to let them cool down before handling, but otherwise gloves are only necessary if you are trying to keep your fingerprints off the tubes for cosmetic reasons. If your tubes are on display, it can be nice to have them all nice and shined up.

However, be warned. Tube amps can have A LOT of power running through them and be very dangerous. The other day we were testing a tube and it crumbled/imploded on us as we were taking it out of our trusty ’73 Fender Champ. The glass envelope of the tube simply broke in half as we were removing it, leaving the entire inside of the tube still plugged into the amp and exposed. Luckily the amp was not on, but having something happen like that with the amp on is a great way to get a nice shock or cut.

Lastly, if you are someone like us and has a ton of tubes laying around. Pro tip, don’t actually leave them lying around. We had a friend who is in the same business fall on a open box of vintage 5Y3GT rectifiers that he left on the ground and he took about 50 of them straight into his stomach and gut. Ultimately this left him hospitalized for over a weak with barium poisoning and he almost f***ing died.

Tips for Vacuum Tube Longevity and Cleaning

When it comes to everyday care, a gentle approach is key. Rocking tubes slightly while installing or removing them helps avoid damage. Gloves or a cloth can be used to keep tubes clean but are not necessary; if your hands are clean and dry, they are your best tool. If pins are dirty, we recommend using 000 steel wool or even a Dremel tool which is our go to for extremely dirty examples. Cleaning pins can save pins from corrosion and keeps system free from microphonics.

Before any maintenance, make sure the amplifier is turned off and unplugged, and be wary of stored electrical charge in capacitors. Store your tubes in a safe, dry place to protect them from accidents or extreme conditions.

The 12AT7 might not be the first tube you think of when determining which tubes to upgrade in your amp, but underestimating their importance is a huge mistake. 12AT7 tubes can control things like how rich your reverb or tremolo is, or define your amp’s headroom and distortion characteristics through the phase inverter (PI). Whether you’re a seasoned tone chaser or just embarking on your tube amp journey, selecting the right 12AT7 can make a world of difference in your rig’s overall sound and performance. In this guide, we’ll dive into the key factors to consider when choosing the best 12AT7 vacuum tube for your setup, helping you unlock the full potential of your amplifier and achieve the tone you’ve been dreaming of.

Before we can say what 12AT7 is best, we need to know its function.

Unfortunately, there is no trick to discovering what your specific 12AT7/ECC81 is doing within your amp. Your best bet is to google your specific amp model and for mostly any major brands like Marshall, Fender, Vox, McIntosh, Marantz etc. you are likely to find your answer on a blog or website article. However, there are many amplifiers out there where this will not be the case and you may not be able to find a blog with the correct information. If this happens, you either need to find the schematic and investigate how the tube is being used in the circuit, or even experiment by removing the tube to see what happens. The Best 12AT7 for Reverb Drivers

A reverb driver tube in a guitar amp makes the reverb effect louder and sends it to the reverb tank, which is where the echo is created. Imagine it like this, when you pluck a guitar string, the tube takes that sound, makes it bigger, and then throws it into a room where it bounces off the walls to create an echo before it comes back to you. This echo is what you hear as reverb, and the tube helps decide how big and rich that echo sounds. This is why picking the right reverb driver is so important.

Great reverb is deep, wide, warm, and natural. So naturally, these are the qualities we look for when picking 12AT7 tubes for use as a reverb driver. Beyond tonal quality, reverb drivers need to be robust, strong, well built tubes. This is because reverb drivers operate under a relatively intense load, which can lead to tube failure over time if the tube is not of a high enough quality. Furthermore, because reverb drivers are somewhere in the preamp stage of the amp, a microphonic 12AT7 will ruin the sound of your amp.

1. RCA and GE 6201/12AT7 Black Plate

Because reverb drivers need warm, natural, robust sounding tubes we typically recommend vintage American made black plate 12AT7. You can read more about black plate tubes in our “Plate Cheat Sheet” but in short, black plate tubes are known for their deep, warm, natural tone so they are a perfect fit. There is only one catch with black plate tubes, if you are moving your amp around often black plate tubes, depending on type, can be sensitive to movement which can lead to failure. This is why top of the line black plate options like the RCA and GE 6201, with plate suspension rods, are superior to all other tubes ever made for driving reverb.

2. Vintage Telefunken and Mullard 12AT7/ECC81

After USA black plate tubes, vintage Telefunken and Mullard 12AT7 tubes are top choices for lush and warm reverb. With a vintage Telefunken 12AT7 you can expect a very similar sound to an American black plate tube, where you will sacrifice some depth and warmth for an extra low noise floor and a more forward reverb sound. Similarly, Mullard 12AT7 may lack warmth compared to the USA black plates, but what they lack in warmth they make up for in loudest and strength. If you think your device has weak sounding reverb, adding a Mullard 12AT7 will bring it back to life.

3. Vintage USA Made 12AT7

If the above tubes are out of budget or seem like overkill, pretty much any vintage US made 12AT7 will be fantastic in the reverb driver position. Many tube junkies might recommend tubes like the RCA black or grey plate 12AT7, and these are indeed great options, but so too are the equivalent examples made by GE, Sylvania, Tung-Sol and Raytheon. If you are stuck not knowing which of these many options to choose, we like Sylvania black plates and GE grey plates over more popular options like RCA and Tung-Sol for this application.

Choosing the Best 12AT7 Tube for Your Phase Inverter

A phase inverter tube serves to convert a single-ended input signal into a balanced, phase-split output. It essentially creates two signals, one that is in phase with the original input and another that is 180 degrees out of phase. This phase-splitting is crucial for driving push-pull amplifier stages, where each signal phase drives a separate set of power tubes. By doing so, it enables the efficient amplification of both halves of the audio waveform, improving power efficiency and reducing certain types of distortion. Additionally, because the phase inverter is still a gain stage tube, it plays a role in defining the overall tonal characteristics and dynamic response of the amplifier.

1. Vintage European 12AT7

European tube manufacturers are really good at producing tubes that are both durable and balanced, so it’s no surprise that brands like Amperex, Telefunken, Mullard, Mazda, Brimar, and Siemens lead the pack when it comes to picking the best tubes for your phase inverter. Phase inverters have the important job of splitting the signal into two parts, and that means the tubes have to be super strong and balanced to get it right. You won’t find any tubes tougher and more dependable than the ones made in Europe, because they’re all about that consistency. This dedication to quality is what puts European-made tubes in a league of their own, especially in high-precision tasks like phase inversion.

2. Sylvania and Philco 12AT7

For the discerning ear of a musician or audiophile, especially when budget is part of the equation, Sylvania and Philco 12AT7 tubes make amazing phase inverters. Unlike their European counterparts, which come with a premium price due to scarcity, these North American tubes are readily available and won’t stretch your finances. These American made tubes are known for their robustness and stability, which translates to reliable performance and quality sound from your amp. So if you’re looking to upgrade or replace your phase inverter and want to do it without significant expense, Sylvania and Philco tubes are a no-brainer! If you are looking for clarity and headroom go for grey plates, if you would like more warmth and a richer overdrive sound go with black plates!

3. RCA, GE & All Other US Brands

RCA is one of our top selling tubes for the phase inverter position, especially in Fender amps. They offer excellent warmth and clarity that can really help give your tube amp some depth and richness. But there is a catch with RCA tubes, they are rare and popular. Therefore, their price is inflated due to demand and scarcity. Are they great tubes and do they make excellent phase inverters… yes! Yet, on the other hand, Mullard and Mazda are supior options for the PI position and they are nearly the same price. Moreover, Sylvania/Philco options are cheaper and will do the job just as good, if not better as well. Beyond all that, brands like GE, Tung-Sol, Raytheon, and Westinghouse all make fantastic sounding options that are very comparable to RCA examples.

(Please note: this logic does not carry over to 12AX7 or other valves. This advice is specific to vintage made 12AT7. Vacuum tube manufacturers each had their stregths and weaknesses when it comes to making particular valves.)

4. Modern 12AT7

Just kidding… There is never any reason to by a modern 12AT7 tube when you can find a vintage 12AT7 for the same price. Try a vintage Japanese 12AT7 if you are still looking to explore reverb driver options.

Best 12AT7 for Gain Stage Tubes

Before delving into the best gain stage 12AT7 tube, it’s crucial to understand what a gain stage tube is and what it does. In essence, the preamp gain stage, typically placed at the start of the signal chain, amplifies a weak electrical signal and boosts it to a suitable strength for further processing through the remaining chain of tubes. This initial amplification is essential for preserving the integrity of the audio signal and ensuring that it can be effectively manipulated and shaped by subsequent components in the audio system, such as equalizers, compressors, and mixers. By adding the right tube at this stage we can control the character of the entire amp, like while maximizing the signal’s dynamic range, ultimately contributing to cleaner and more faithful audio reproduction.

It’s worth noting that while it’s not a common practice, the use of 12AT7 tubes in the gain stage preamp section of high-fidelity stereo amplifiers can have a significant impact on sound quality. • The Optimal 12AT7 for Guitar Amplifier Gain Stages

If you want to add headroom to your guitar amp or just trying to tame it out a bit, installing a 12AT7 in place of one of your 12AX7’s could make you fall in love with your amp all over again and ultimately save you hundreds in not having to buy a new amp just to get some clean tones. If you do decide to go down this route, and you want to add a 12AT7 into the gain stage of your amp, we recommend Vintage USA 12AT7 for the job. Specically, you want to try black plates for extra warmth and depth or grey plates for a little extra twang.

Why vintage USA tubes? In our opinion modern made 12AT7 sound shrill and have too shirt a life span to justify their price. While European 12AT7 on the other hand are just too sterile sounding. This leaves the natural warm and rich sounding American tubes as almost a no brainer choice for most guitar amp gain stage applications. Try brands like Tung-Sol, GE, Raytheon, and Westinghouse… an maybe you have heard before… RCA is pretty good too.

Conclusion

Selecting the ideal 12AT7 vacuum tube for your amplifier is a nuanced decision crucial to shaping your amp’s sound. Why are Vacuum Tubes Also Called Valves?

Ever wondered why vacuum tubes are also called valves? It’s actually pretty cool and has to do with how they work. Vacuum tubes control the flow of electrons, kind of like how a valve controls water in a pipe. This simple yet clever function has made them a big deal in the world of electronics for over a century. In this article, we’re diving into their history and how this unique function earned them the nickname “valves.” Let’s get into it and see why this old-school tech still matters today.

Vacuum tubes work by managing the movement of electrons in a controlled environment, which is basically an empty space or a ‘vacuum’. Imagine electrons as tiny particles that carry electrical energy. In these tubes, when an electric charge is applied, it creates an electric field that pushes or pulls these electrons in a specific direction. This is similar to how a water valve can control the direction and flow of water. This led him to discover that a heated filament inside a vacuum tube could detect radio waves. He realized that electrons would flow only from the heated filament, or cathode, to a metal plate, or anode, creating a one-way current.

Just a few years later, in 1906, an American inventor, Lee De Forest, added a third element, called the “grid,” to Fleming’s diode, turning it into a triode. It is this invention of the grid that gave vacuum tubes their “valve” like function.

How to Identify Fake Tubes

How to Identify Fake Vacuum Tubes

It doesn’t happen often but this week we got burned on some fake Mullard tubes!

We are sharing our experience not only to save folks from this happening to them, but also because we had a horrible experience talking with the seller “Treasure Cove Paradise.” This kind of interaction is exactly why we started Fuzz Audio in the first place, so we think it is worth sharing.

We typically don’t buy tubes from eBay, but when we saw a listing for 3 testing strong Mullard 12AX7 for $100, curiosity got the better of us and we pounced. Silly us.

A SERIES OF RED FLAGS

[red flag] The label was created 19 days after we placed the order. Never a good sign when you see that, but we understand life happens and everyone gets busy. Luckily, we have no shortage of tubes and we were able to wait.

Unfortunately, the real fun started once the tubes finally arrived (nearly a month later).

[red flag] When we opened the box, we found a ball of bubble wrap, and at the center were our three tubes mashed together in a sandwich bag, glass on glass. Because we were not planning on making a post about this experience, we did not snap a photo, but it sure was worthy of one.

[red flag] Once we were able to remove the mess of tape and bubble wrap, we finally discovered that these were not Mullard 12AX7s, but were instead Japanese Mullard clones! While we are running low on Japanese 12AX7, we would not have paid what we did, as we normally buy these tubes in bulk. Nothing against Japanese tubes as they are awesome quality valves.

Despite the mistake, we tested them, and they tested great! Fortunately they survived their journey even though the sellers packing left much to be desired. Packing tubes isn’t always easy, especially when you don’t have nifty packing like us…

Finally, we reached out the buyer to let him know these were not indeed Mullard 12AX7 but instead Japanese Mullard clones and asked for a partial or full refund.

[red flag] The seller was immediately accusatory and responded with this gem: “Nothing wrong with these tubes. You also used hate speech and discriminatory language against Japanese. I do not wish to do business or speak to you again.”

A GEOGRAPHY LESSON

After making such a statement, I went back to see what I said. I myself am fairly sensitive to discriminatory language of any kind. We referred to the tube as a “Japanese fake.” Was that it?

I responded, telling him that the tubes were made in Japan, not England. He sarcastically questioned our geographical knowledge by querying, “Great Britain is in Japan? Please give me proof these are from Japan. Hammond and Great Britain is written on them. Nowhere does it read Japan.”

At that point, I took this as a learning opportunity and thought I would take the time to explain why they were indeed Japan made.

I sent him photos of a variety of tubes to try to explain how the plates and type of getter are slightly different. I further explained that true Mullard tubes have “B” codes for Blackburn, England. All three of these tubes are missing a “B” code. And lastly, I shared that real Mullard tubes say “Made in Great Britain,” not “GT Britain.”

Ultimately, although his eBay photos were poor and none of the photos showed the “GT Britain” text, which is a giveaway for a fake, we do think he simply made an honest mistake, rather than have knowingly advertised Japanese tubes as Mullards.

Then the Real Frustration Began...

But here is where our frustration comes in. This seller is unwilling to give us a refund, a partial refund or anything of the sort. The seller was incredibly rude, insulting, and accusatory. [red flags] As a buyer, we just wanted to make sure we got what we were paying for, and clearly we were not on the same page. After taking the time to explain our position (and by extension making him a more educated seller), the seller remained unwilling to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution.

The seller, “Treasure Cove Paradise” instead doubled down and told us that he had “sold these to others with no complaints.” There are tens of thousands of these tubes out there that are mismarked with “GT Britain” and it is irresponsible to pass them off as true Mullard tubes. Not all “GT Britain” marked tubes are super nice Japanese Mullard clones either. We have many fake Russian tubes with the “GT Britain” designation as well, and passing these tubes off as Mullards knowingly would be a scam.

Let our experience here be a lesson to all and maybe this is a good time to check your Mullards to make sure they do indeed say “Made in Great Britain” and have “B” codes.

Unfortunately, with vintage tube buying, you need to either have a source you trust or know what you are doing. This is the issue with buying tubes on eBay. There is not much accountability and the process can be frustrating. Here at Fuzz Audio, we strive to do things differently, and our customers are at the heart of what we do. We want to educate our customers in the process so you can really enjoy your gear and be rest assured that you are working with a company you can trust.

Conclusion

In summary, let’s talk about a few things that make these tubes “Japanese Fakes.” This is a harsh way to put it, but they were fake and were stamped with “GT Britain” to mislead the consumer into thinking this was made in the UK when it wasn’t. It could have even been Mullard themselves who did this, but it doesn’t make it a “real” Mullard tube. You know… the tubes that typically sell for $100/piece, not $100 for 3… and that’s on us.

1. The “B” code — the “B” code is the Mullard factory code for Blackburn, England. As far as we know, the Blackburn factory is the only Mullard factory in England that manufactured 12AX7. If you have one Mullard tube missing a “B” code it could just have been rubbed off. But if you have 3 mint tubes and all three are missing the Blackburn code, it is very unlikely that they are authentic. Furthermore, “B” codes are often etched into the glass so they should always be slightly visible. If your tube does not have a “B” code you need to check for other signs of authenticity.

2. The “Change Code” — all Mullard tubes at one point received what is called a “change code.” This code was used to designate various changes Mullard made in their tube designs, as well as acted as a date code. For instance, F91 is a long plate 12AX7 variation, and the F92 long plate eventually replaced the F91 and so on. People collect tubes based off this code frequently as it is a way to follow the history of the Mullard 12AX7.

3. Plate width and staple type — it’s hard to see in photos, but Japanese Mullard clones have slightly wider plates and different shaped staple holes. We have seen so many tubes we that can immediately tell which are authentic Mullards form those that are clones based on plate alone. This is a more advanced method of determining manufacturer.

4. Getter Type — again not the easiest way to tell a tube is authentic for a novice, but a Mullard tube WILL NEVER HAVE A GETTER AT 45 degrees. Only, Matsushita clones have getters that come off at 45 degrees from the top spacer mica. Unfortunately, in the case of these tubes, they have the typical getter style that Blackburn Mullards also have, where the getter is parallel with the mica. Yet, if you look very closely, you can see the Japanese getter is slightly taller. The devil is in the details!

Are Vintage Tubes Really Better?

If you are just getting into vacuum tube amplifiers or simply looking to maintain an amp you have owned for years, when considering what brand of valves to buy there is something you should know about modern vacuum tubes: they often suck, and yes, vintage tubes are really better.

That’s right, we said it, modern tubes, for the most part, are just no good compared to their vintage counterparts. Modern tubes have shorter life spans, sound worse, and are made by sweatshop labor. So why do so few companies have the courage to make these assertions? Because they sell those products, of course, and business 101 says you do not speak poorly of the products you sell.

New Tubes vs. Vintage: 3 Reasons Why Fuzz Audio Hates Modern Vacuum Tubes

1. Modern Tube Manufacturers Use Exploited Labor

At Fuzz Audio, we refuse to nitpick tonal characteristics and manufacturing quality when the first issue we have with modern valves has to do with the factory locations. Russia and China are the only countries producing large quantities of tubes these days, and these countries are not known for protecting the rights of workers, to say the least.

When the vacuum tube was invented, the manufacture of tubes involved the leading technologies of the time. It allowed radio and other electronics to flourish, and all of major electronics brands, around the world, competed to create the quietist, most powerful, most accessible, and smallest vacuum tubes. Factories employed top engineers and scientists to not only invent glorious valves but also to oversee the manufacturing process to ensure quality was achieved. Now compare that to modern day, where the market has been reduced to the niche corner of guitar and HiFi amplifier use, and manufacturers compete to make the cheapest tubes. Unfortunately, the easiest way to make inexpensive tubes is to locate factories where the labor force is exploited and oversight does not exist. 2. Modern Tubes Do Not Last

Unsurprisingly, when tube manufacturers cut corners to save money, quality is sacrificed. Tone aside, modern vacuum tubes go bad at a much faster rate than do vintage tubes, and that alone is a reason to go vintage. We know this because we often sell to folks who are replacing faulty new tubes. Moreover, we test hundreds of tubes that are sixty years old with only around a ten percent rejection rate. Once tested good, vintage tubes rarely go bad unless they are abused. In comparison, we see the same rejection rate, or worse, in tubes that are only a few years old or even brand new. Under stress these new tubes can fail within a year.

When deciding what tubes to buy, longevity or lifespan should always be taken into consideration, especially if you use your amplifier (or other tube device) frequently or plan to keep it for an extended period of time. This is especially important if you are a professional musician who needs an amp to be reliable. We have had countless customers complain that they have had to replace the 5AR4/GZ34 in their Deluxe Reverb several times within a ten-year period, because the modern versions kept failing. On the other hand, we have never had one of our vintage 5AR4’s returned because of failure. They are known to last decades even under heavy loads.

3. Vintage Tubes for Best Tone

Our third and final reason we disapprove of modern tubes is that they lack the tonal complexities of vintage tubes. It is a bit of a mystery, but modern tubes do not sound as good as their vintage counterparts. It could because of a drop in the quality of manufacture, but tube designs have also changed over time, and these changes seem to have an impact on tonal quality.

When Should You Consider Buying Modern Valves?

Although vintage tubes are better in pretty much every way, some HiFi and guitar applications call for tubes that can cost thousands of dollars each. In these circumstances, it is often a good idea to look at modern tubes if your budget does not allow for vintage. Take for example, a Western Electric 300b, which can cost upwards ten thousand dollars for a pair. It’s best not to install those in an amplifier that is only worth 4k or less.

To our benefit, vintage manufacturers raced to create better and better vacuum tubes, and by the mid ’60s manufacturers had perfected the art. These tubes were strong, long lasting, quiet, warm, full, and articulate in tone. In contrast, nowadays companies compete to create the cheapest tubes, locating factories in developing nations so they can pay workers little for hard, repetitive work.

When Should You Replace Your Vacuum Tubes?

WhEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR VACUUM TUBES?

The vacuum tubes in your amplifier are the most critical components. Without them, your amplifier will not power on, nor will it allow any signal to pass through to the speaker or output jack. Not only are tubes an integral part of the signal path, in a guitar amp they are responsible for both amplification and tone. In the audio world, they are responsible for amplification, fidelity, noise level, and intangible qualities related to tone. All of this means that the health and performance of your amplifier depend on the condition of its tubes. Because your amplifier is so valve dependent, there are many reasons why replacing your tubes might be necessary to keep your amplifier functioning as it should. We will break down our reasons (for replacing tubes) into three categories, starting with the most obvious.

A Malfunctioning Amplifier

One bad tube (let alone a few) can create an abundance of issues. The result can be quite a headache if you do not have a replacement set of tubes or a tube tester on hand. The most common reason for starting an inquiry into buying a new tube, a new set of tubes, or even a tube tester, involves improving amplifier health.

Some of the main symptoms of a bad tube include loud hiss, hum, white noise, popping or screeching. These issues can often be heard even at low volume, and when bad enough such noises can make your amp unplayable. A few months ago, we had a vintage amp come through the door with a bad preamp tube. The amp had such a constant loud noise that it could be used as a tremolo, metronome, drum machine, or a steam-engine sound effect. This type of failure is cause by a microphonic tube, and it is one of easiest issues to diagnose.

NOS 7025s of all makes.

GE or RCA short plates.

Mullard and Telefunken 12AX7s.

Tone and Performance

The next reason to think about changing your tubes is to improve the tone and overall performance of your amplifier. Each tube, modern and vintage alike, comes with unique tonal qualities that can alter how your amplifier sounds and feels. Think of it as analogous to acoustic guitars. Sure, all acoustic guitars sound, well, like acoustic guitars; but they can vary enormously with respect to frequency balance, sustain, harshness, etc., even within a given model. It is generally not hard to tell a “cheap” guitar from a high-end one. Tubes are much like this. You can have an array of tubes, ranging from low-end ($) to high-end ($), and more often than not it is the higher end tubes that are regarded as “better.”

Guitarists who play a lot, especially with the same amplifier, will be able to tell an immediate difference in tone, volume, and headroom (referring to how loud an amp will get before breakup/distortion) between a bottom-end modern tube and a top-end vintage tube. However, it is important to note that results can depend greatly on the amplifier you are using and your ability and confidence in choosing the correct tube. Harmonic and distortion characteristics relate in part to the “amplification factor” or gain of a given tube or type of tube. To put this into context, the 12AX7 has a gain or “amplification factor” of 100 (on average). Compare this to the 12AT7 which has a gain factor of 60 (again on average for new tubes). The 12AX7 is the producing 40% more gain than the 12AT7. Thus, swapping out a 12AX7 for a 12AT7 will produce some interesting results!

Rock legend, Stevie Ray Vaughn famously used 5751 tubes in his Fender tweed style amps to achieve his creamy, heavy and thick edge of breakup/overdrive sound. The 5751 has a gain factor of 70, right in between the 12AX7 and 12AT7, so for some guitarists this tube makes a lot of sense as a substitute. Your volume may suffer but just turn the dial up a bit and you’ve got a whole new amp.

While gain is an important factor in determining tone and volume, there are other important factors, many of which remain somewhat mystical. Two tubes of similar type and gain, but with different construction characteristics can and will sound very different. For example, a vintage RCA black plate will produce a sound quality very different from many modern tubes with similar gain values, as a result of the different harmonic characteristics of the tubes combined with the operating conditions of the amplifier.

Restoration and Cloning

Swapping guitar tubes for restoration purposes can make a ton of sense in the right circumstances. If you are interested in returning an amplifier to its original stock condition or are making a truly accurate clone, using period and brand accurate tubes is one of the best ways to make sure your amplifier is performing as it would have decades ago.

This tube buyers guide will not go out of its way to promote NOS (new old stock) tubes over modern tubes, but NOS tubes can have special value based on both tone and authenticity. If someone has gone to the expense and trouble to acquire or restore a vintage amplifier, or if they desire to have an authentic a clone, it makes sense to invest in stock (original for that model) tubes. Not only do they improve resale value, but NOS tubes can be a key element in achieving vintage sound. Modern tubes are great for many types of applications, but they are not great at sounding like vintage tubes.

There are exceptions to the rule that vintage amps require vintage tubes. Some amplifiers require very specific, very expensive NOS tubes. When this is the case, it can make some sense to compromise by using used vintage tubes, reissue tubes, or modern “boutique” variants.
